Abstract

The course will teach students to analyse complexity within an empirical case that explores a current topic or controversy within the field of science, technology, and innovation.

Description

Concurrent challenges in and beyond digitalization are often radically complex, which requires skilled and professional use of both qualitative methods and data-exploration to diagnose and act upon.

Students will be introduced to a range of conceptual and technical tools for generating and visualizing data and analyzing complexity. Throughout the course students will experiment with different techniques for generating data and visualizing complexity. Based on case work, students will be learn to reflect on how visualizations work as simplifications and can inform decision-making.

Students will learn a variety of qualitative approaches to quantitative data, focusing on inductive, exploratory inquiry.

After the course, students will be capable of dealing with, communicating, and acting constructively in situations faced by complex challenges without straightforward solutions.

The course will cover topics such as complexity thinking, storytelling with data, data and digital methods, situational analysis, problematization, data politics and technical tools for data-visualization and exploration.

Formal prerequisites
Please note that this course is only available for students enrolled in the programme Digital Innovation & Management. Moreover the student must always meet the admission requirements of the IT University.
Intended learning outcomes

After the course, the student should be able to:

  • Develop research questions that allow for exploratory and inductive inquiry into an empirical case through an iterative process of data collection, analysis, and storytelling.
  • Apply selected methods and conceptual tools to analyze complexity in an empirical case.
  • Interpret data visualizations generated using the technical and conceptual tools provided in the course.
  • Reflect upon the decisions made in the research process relating data visualizations to the development of the research question or focus.
  • Discuss the relationship between chosen methods, theories, and data, and their implications for the findings
Learning activities

14 weeks of teaching consisting of lectures, exercises and supervision.

Each week students have 4 hours of lecture and 4 hours of exercises.

During exercises students will be divided into groups of 40 working with TAs to practically engage with the exercises and topics of the week.

Mandatory activities

There are three mandatory activities in the course: two written and one oral. These must be completed before participation in the final group report submission and oral exam. The two written activities are:

  1. Submission of individual weekly reflections on the course literature and/or exercises.
  2. Hand-in of a group lab notebook, tracking weekly progress. These will happen at three points in the semester. These activities are Pass/Fail and evaluated on the basis of successful, timely submission.

The oral mandatory activity is a presentation of group work that takes place toward the end of the semester, but before exam submission.

Students are expected to attend exercises as these will sometimes include group work in support of the completion of mandatory assignments.

The student will receive the grade NA (not approved) at the ordinary exam, if the mandatory activities are not approved and the student will use an exam attempt.

D2G: Submission of written work for groups with following oral exam supplemented by the work submitted. The group has a shared responsibility for the content of the report.
Exam description:

Group size: 4-6 students.  Reports are handed in by groups and students are examined as a group and evaluated on the basis of demonstration of fulfillment of the intended learning objectives for the course. 

The final report should be 15 pages plus 3 additional pages per student in the group (i.e. a 4 person group will have a 27 page report) excluding front and end matter and figures. 

The oral exam begins with a joint presentation (app. 10 min) followed by a group dialogue (app. 30 min). Each student in the group will then be examined individually for 20 min each. The exam ends with 20 min for feedback. The total duration of the exam will be 2h 20min for groups of 4 students and 3h for groups of 6 students.

In the case of a re-exam of an individual student, the student will be asked to provide an addendum to the original group report. In the case of a re-exam of the whole group, the group will be asked to prepare a new group report.
