Læringsmål:After the course, the student should be able to:

• Reason about IT systems and components based on an understanding of how
systems are composed in terms of layers of abstraction and encapsulated
components, and explain the nature and operation of principal layers and
components.
• Employ basic techniques of computer programming to create rudimentary
programs, where the function includes providing simple services over the Internet.
• Exemplify computational problems whose solutions require radically different amounts of computer resources.
• Interpret and use common technical terms in the IT business at the level of
participating in communication with people on several levels in various subfields
of the IT industry.
• Apply a technical view on IT system specification when assessing whether demands are easily fulfilled, challenging, or unrealistic.
Fagligt indhold:The course conveys a fundamental understanding of the foundations underlying all IT systems, essential for the ability to make correct decisions that in any way involve information technology. This includes:

• How layers of abstraction can break down seemingly insurmountable tasks into
manageable problems.
• How different problems are categorized as belonging to different disciplines, each with their well-defined tools.
• What programs are, how they are internally composed, and how they run on
underlying hardware.
• How programs are grouped together into IT system components, and how these
components are connected to each other, locally as well as globally, to compose
increasingly complex IT infrastructures.

In order to allow students to grasp these various aspects, the course includes exercises that let students create operational (albeit simple) examples of IT system components, using a general programming language and basic tools for network services. Understanding of surrounding and underlying parts of systems are supported by these practical experiences.

Part of teaching is organized around group work, where each group explore a different technical subject, and report their findings to the other students.
Læringsaktiviteter:12 forelæsninger og 12 øvelsesgange

Several obligatory assignments to be handed in and assessed.

Obligatoriske aktivititer:During this course students will be required to hand in mandatory assignments (e.g. attendance, papers, exercises, presentations, productions), that need to be completed/approved before being eligible to register for the examination and e.g. being allowed to submit written work for examination. Failure to hand in these mandatory assignments on time will mean that the registration for examination is annulled.

These mandatory assignments are (Deadlines are posted separately, e.g. on the course blog):
* 3 assignments

Submission/completion of mandatory activities before xxx at 14:00.
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

The duration of the written examination is 4 hour(s). During the written exam, students have access to any written aids that they bring on paper or installed in local computer hardware (disk, USB memory, etc.). Software use during the exam is restricted to viewing documents and editing answers. Internet communication is restricted to accessing specific servers dedicated to the exam (detailed specifications to be given). Accessing any other internet services is prohibited. For instance, web browsing, access to cloud services, use of search engines, or communicating with individuals via the internet is prohibited.

The re-examination may, in the event that the number of participating students is small, be held as an oral exam (B11) with similar restrictions during preparation time as during the written exam.
