Formelle forudsætninger:There are no formal prerequisites for being admitted to the course.
Læringsmål:After the course the student should be able to:

  • Compare and contrast video games with other forms of software according to an HCI perspective

  • Apply multiple forms of playability and usability evaluations to video games in both their development and final forms

  • Argue for the importance of playability/usability evaluation in the game development life-cycle

  • Design and conduct a playability/usability evaluation plan for a game under development in collaboration with the developers

  • Classify, interpret, and discuss the playability/usability issues identified during the project

Fagligt indhold:Great video games cannot easily be developed in a vacuum. Crucially, designers and developers must have the ability to assess their games both by examining them systematically themselves, and by gaining access to the experiences and opinions of actual players.

The subject of this course is the evaluation of the usability and playability of video games during their design and development. The course is aimed to provide technical students with an understanding of the consequences of game design and development decisions for actual players, as well as to show how the students' technical understanding of video game development can contribute significantly toward understanding and communicating issues and ideas for improvement uncovered during evaluation.

In the course we will cover a variety of subjects, including:

  • The meaning of concepts such as 'HCI', 'usability', and 'playability' as applied to video games

  • What HCI-based approaches can contribute to better game design and development

  • Specific expert-based evaluation methods, such as heuristic evaluation, and their application to games

  • Conducting qualitative user research for games

  • The use of quantitative approaches to video game evaluation, particularly instrumentation and game metrics

  • The impact of cultural and other factors on players' reactions to and playing of a video game

  • Successfully communicating evaluation results to other members of a development team

  • Creating and carrying out an evaluation plan which fits within the development cycle of a video game

At the end of the course students will be able to not only work effectively as evaluators of video games, but also to direct the ideas and techniques learnt onto their own games both to improve them and to inspire new and interesting designs.

Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

The course will consist of:

  • A series of 14 lectures presenting the core content of the course and explaining both the theory and practical application of HCI approaches to video game evaluation.

  • A number of weekly exercises designed to cement knowledge of the practical skills needed to evaluate a video game

  • A larger project designed to give students the experience of evaluating a game in development

  •
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

There will be a compulsory exercise during the semester involving the evaluation of a video game according to any chosen method. The written report will be evaluated to determine students' current ability to apply methods and reflect on them.

There will be one larger project which will require producing a written evaluation report on one of the games in development in the Persuasive Games elective course. Assessment will be of the written report.
