Fagligt indhold:Digital games are an increasingly popular genre of entertainment, marketing, expression and art. In this course we consider games from a theoretical and analytical perspective, addressing the challenging question that plagues (or should plague) game studies researchers: what are digital games, exactly?

The course covers central topics that address this question and introduce students to the growing field of Game Studies. The course follows the interdisciplinary nature of the field, welcoming students from a variety of academic backgrounds.

The course includes both a theoretical and a practical approach including hands-on gaming sessions which take the theory and apply it to specific games through exercises that have been developed specifically for this end. The course will cover these five main topics:

- Game ontology
- Methodological concerns in game studies
- Textual and narrative dimensions of games
- Players and player psychology
- Ideological concerns in games
