Læringsmål: | The course is about location-based applications for mobile workers. It aims at giving students a thorough insight into the prospects and issues of applying the emerging wireless technologies of communication and positioning for supporting mobile action and interaction in contemporary work settings.
After the course the student will know the technical principles of positioning mobile devises; be able to engage competently in the development of location-based mobile applications; have an understanding of the design issues arising from the distributed nature of mobile wireless networks; have an understanding of the application prospects and issues with location-based mobile applications; have an understanding of the conceptual foundation of designing location-based applications (e.g., determining location, nearness, context); have an understanding of the interface design prospects and issues with mobile applications. |
Fagligt indhold: | The course covers the following topics: Characteristics of mobile working. Case studies of mobile working (e.g., process control; maritime navigation; hospital work; emergency management). Mobile communication technologies (GSM, UMTS, IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, RFID, etc.) Positioning technologies (GPS, Network-based positioning). Distributed systems (e.g., strategies of achieving synchronization and consistence over distributed transactions). Designing IT applications for mobile workers. Mobile and tangible interfaces.
Students will be engaged in project work, developing a conceptual design of an application for selected use scenarios. |
Læringsaktiviteter: | In the first half of the course, course work will be primarily based upon lectures and exercises; in the second half, primarily project work. |
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse: | X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 13-skala, Intern censur During the course students (working in groups) prepare a written report that is the point of departure of the oral exam. Deadline for handing in written delivery is 30 April before 12.00 a.m. at the Examination office.
The student opens by giving a short presentation on a topic in the report of his or her own chosing and can use overheads as well as notes.
