Læringsmål: | The aim of this course is to give students further competences within game development especially with regard to game design and questions related to implementation of Massively-Multiplayer Games (MMO). Building an MMO is one of the most challenging tasks a game developer can undertake, and in many respects it differs quite radically from other game development projects. Yet, in the developer community there is a growing interest for building such games. The tremendous success of titles such as Lineage, Everquest and most recently, World of Warcraft shows that also players are taking to these games in ever-greater numbers.
A main goal of this course is to develop a better understanding of what an MMO is, and what makes these games so fascinating for both developers and players alike. We will NOT build an MMO in this course, instead, students will be given the opportunity to work on different aspects of both design and implementation using a commercial platform that lends itself well to user customization within a large and well established game world with almost 90.000 users. |
Fagligt indhold: | Each class begins with a lecture followed by discussion aimed to explore a number of topics central to the understanding of MMOs. Throughout the course students will be working on projects in groups of 3-5. In order to focus, and maximize the learning potential for all, one platform has been chosen for use in this course: "Second Life" by Linden Labs.
"Second Life is a 3D platform for developers who want to present, promote, and sell their content and applications to a broad online audience within an immersive, shared space. Unlike other massive multiplayer online experiences, Second Life has few restrictions and provides broad and flexible content authoring experiences for developers interested in building, creating and evolving the world of Second Life."
