Formelle forudsætninger:IT at user level. Knowledge of programming is an advantage, but not a necessity.
Læringsmål:The goal of this course is to enable you to design user interfaces in a systematic way. You need to consider the needs and psychology of the user, as well as the IT platform that drives the system and the data, which the system stores. In order to plan the data content of the system, you need to learn how to model data.

Detailed goal description:
  • You will be able to describe the user¿s work tasks and working situation briefly.
  • You will be able to explain what user friendliness is and how it is measured.
  • You will be able to explain how a cognitive circumstance such as gestalts and mental models influence the way a user sees a system.
  • You will be able to build a data model and convert it into a simple data base.
  • You will be able to design an interface systematically from descriptions of the work tasks and a data model.
  • You will be able to design prototypes of the user interface and assess the suitability of different sorts of prototypes in given situations.
  • You will be able to test the user friendliness of a prototype, to report encountered problems, and to suggest improvements.
  • You will be able to explain how to develop interfaces systematically in a concise course of events, and how this is connected with object oriented analysis and design (OOA/OOD).

  • Fagligt indhold:The user interface is the part of an IT system that you see (and hear) as ordinary user. It could be e.g. images, buttons and sound signals. The interface reflects the data that the system contains and the functions it has. An important part of developing a system is to design the user interface, i.e. establishing the look and functions of the system. (Later you carry out the system technically, by e.g. doing a programme. We do this later in the course, but it is an optional part and thus it isn¿t part of the course goals.)

Whether the system if easy to learn, task efficient and pleasant to work with for the individual user is mainly a question about whether the user interface is well designed. Whether the system can do the tasks you expect of it, also depends on the system¿s capability of storing the relevant data. This means that you also need to design (model) the data that the system needs to store. While data modelling is a well known discipline that most practicians do well, it is a different case with user interface. This course will provide you with systematic help and practical experience in this area. You will be designing several user interfaces during the course, and at the examination you will also design a user interface.
