Formelle forudsætninger: Recommended prerequisites: An introductory course in the design of interactive systems - supplemented by basic programming skills, for example acquired by having completed a programming course and a project involving programming.
Læringsmål: The overall aim of the course is to make participants familiar with issues, techniques, concepts, and ways of working that are central to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and thereby to the design of usable systems. The course focuses on issues and theories related to evaluation methods and the concept of usability. Specifically, participants will acquire an understanding of the following issues and an ability to make competent use of this understanding in relation to the design and evaluation of IT systems: - principles for and barriers to user-centred design - the three dimensions of usability: effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction - matching evaluation methods to system, task, and user characteristics - selected usability inspection methods - selected user-based usability evaluation methods - usage aspects of information seeking and retrieval - usage aspects of computer-support for collaboration With respect to usability inspection methods and user-based usability evaluation methods participants will also acquire practical experience in the use of the methods. Evaluation criteria (items 1 and 4 from RU¿s general evaluation criteria): knowledge of the subject area and mastery and application of theories and methods.
Fagligt indhold: The HCI course involves lectures, seminars, and weekly assignments. With the concept of usability as their starting point the lectures are about aspects of and techniques for user-centred systems development. Three core aspects of usability are effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction, which are all complex notions that vary considerably with the concrete users, tasks, and organizational setting. For many interactive systems, e.g. on the Web, there is a conflict between wanting to design systems that can be used universally and the individual differences between people in the potential target group. Evaluation is a core activity in user-centred systems development and is supported by a variety of evaluation methods. Selected evaluation methods will be presented and discussed. Further, participants will get practical experience with the evaluation methods in the weekly assignments, which are made by the participants in small groups. The weekly assignments are a major part of the written assignment that forms the basis for the final, individual oral exam. Of the manifold activities systems are intended to support the course pays special attention to information seeking and collaboration. An understanding of how information seeking and collaboration are accomplished and why these activities are complex is important to the successful development of many IT systems.
