Maks. antal deltagere:50
Formelle forudsætninger:As a prequisite to the course, students should have a basic grasp of programming (e.g., data modelling, objected-oriented programming, web programming, or XML). In addition, a basic understanding of network technologies is advantageous.

Læringsmål:The course is about location-based applications for mobile workers. It aims at giving
students a thorough insight into the prospects and issues of applying the emerging wireless technologies of communication and positioning for supporting mobile
action and interaction in contemporary work settings.

After the course the student will:
  • know the technical principles of positioning mobile devices;
  • be able to engage competently in the development of location-based mobile applications;
  • have an understanding of the design issues arising from the distributed nature of mobile wireless networks;
  • have an understanding of the application prospects and issues with location-based mobile applications;
  • have an understanding of the conceptual foundation of designing location-based applications (e.g., determining location, nearness, context);
  • have an understanding of the interface design prospects and issues with mobile applications.

Fagligt indhold:The course covers the following topics:
  • Characteristics of mobile action and interaction.
  • Case studies of mobile action and interaction (e.g., process control work; hospital work; emergency management; location-based games).
  • Technologies for massively interconnected wireless infrastructures: IEEE 802.11b (WLAN), IEEE 802.15.3/4 (High-rate/Low-rate Personal Area Network, WPAN), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), GPS, WLAN for indoor positioning, Sensor Networks.
  • Location models: concepts and implementations.
  • Designing IT applications for mobile workers.
  • Mobile and tangible interfaces.
Students will be engaged in project work, developing a conceptual design of an application for selected use scenarios.

Læringsaktiviteter:12 forelæsninger + lejlighedsvis øvelser i forbindelse med undervisningen

In the first half of the course, course work will be primarily based upon lectures and exercises; in the second half, primarily project work.

NB! In the introductory week, meaning from 30 January to 3 February 2006, exercises from 13:00 to 16:00 are cancelled. This means, that there will be only lectures from 9:00 to 12:00.
