Kursusnavn (dansk):Affective Computing
Kursusnavn (engelsk):Affective Computing
Semester:Forår 2013
Udbydes under:cand.it., spil (games)
Omfang i ECTS:7,50
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://learnit.itu.dk
Min. antal deltagere:12
Forventet antal deltagere:70
Maks. antal deltagere:80
Formelle forudsætninger:There are no formal prerequisites for being admitted to the course.
Læringsmål:After the course the students should be able to:

* Describe the concept of affective computing and the challenges that it tackles with.
* Describe the methods for recognizing various emotions or affective states with different modalities.
* Describe the methods for expressing various emotions or affective states with different modalities.
* Explain the relations between emotion and cognition using the theories and models of emotion.
* Design and implement a simple affective computing application by applying the theories and models of emotion.
Fagligt indhold:The primary goal of the course is the understanding of emotion-oriented computing. The course focuses on three main facets of affective computing: (1) Theories and models of emotion; (2) Computational approaches to emotion; (3) Applications in affective computing. The course will partly cover the following topics:

Theories and models of emotion
* Discrete models of basic emotions
* Two-dimensional emotion models in a continuous space (arousal & valence)
* Emotions and personalities (Big five personality traits)
* Cognition-oriented emotion models (e.g., the OCC model)
* Appraisal and Coping
* Social emotions (e.g., guilt, shame, respect, empathy, etc.)
* Fake emotions (i.e., pretending or lying)
* FACS (Facial Action Coding System)

Computational approaches to emotion
* Computational models of emotion
* Methods for recognizing emotion with visual/audio modality
* Methods for expressing emotion with visual/audio modality

Applications
* Human-Computer/Robot Interaction
* Storytelling and Games
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

o 7 weeks of intensive lectures + mandatory individual assignment. The mandatory individual assignments (2-page written report of research proposal, 1-page written report of affective computing summary) will be handed-in *TBD* (*hard deadline*) to the instructor. Please note that students will not be eligible for the final exam if they fail on this assignment.

o 7 weeks of individual/group project work with supervision (some lectures are planned during this period). The individual/group project report (written work + source code and/or video production) will be handed-in at the examination office by *TBD* (*hard deadline*).

Students are responsible for attending lectures (some of which will likely be by outside guest speakers) and then working on their projects independently (individual mandatory assignment) or in groups (maximum number of two). Besides the hours planned for lectures, additional hours for tutorial, exercise, and supervision are provided. It will complement the theory covered during the lectures and will also help the students accomplish their own individual/group projects.

Obligatoriske aktivititer:There are three mandatory activities or assignments. First, every student must hand in a 2-page written report of research project proposal within a month after class begins. This research project can be either individual or a group of two. Second, every student also hand in a 1-page written report of affective computing summary within two months after class begins. Last, every student must hand in a final individual/group project report (written work + source code and/or video production) before the final oral exam. The details will be announced later.
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

During this course students will be required to hand in an individual mandatory assignment (i.e. report and production). These mandatory assignments need to be completed/approved before being eligible to register for the examination. Failure to hand in these mandatory assignments on time will mean that the registration for examination is annulled. The mandatory assignment is also referred as individual assignment (see above). The mandatory assignment deadline is posted above and at the course blog. Additional deadlines will be posted separately, e.g. at the course blog. The total duration of the oral examination is 30 minutes per examinee.

Litteratur udover forskningsartikler:To be announced.
