This course is part of the fourth semester on the bachelor in Digital Media and Design. A description of the course of study can be found here (in Danish): Bachelor Digital Media

The students attending Concept Development with Industry will be expected to have knowledge and experience corresponding to one and a half years of university studies within digital media and design, more specifically the subject areas in these study activities on the first three semesters of the DMD bachelor's programme:

Introduction to Interaction Design, Introduction to Media and Communication, Dissemination, Project Work and Web Design, Sketching and Prototyping, Digital Media Culture, Cross media, Digital Aesthetics, Understanding and Engaging Users, Mobile Media and Social IT.

The students are thus expected to have theoretical and methodological insights as well as practical experience within these areas.
Læringsmål:After Concept Development with Industry the student should be able to:

• Identify a potential target group and reflect on its needs for a proposed digital media product
• Identify relevant stakeholders that can influence the outcome of the proposed concept.
• Design a conceptual model
• Evaluate the concept with the target group
• Design a business model for the concept, and reflect on its viability in the organisation commissioning the concept
• Perform a pitch of the concept both orally and in writing by using appropriate audio/ visual/ textual means.
• Reflect on theory and methods of concept development relevant to the developed concept

Fagligt indhold: Project cluster
This is a project cluster. Students who sign up for this project cluster will also need to register their specific project of 15 ECTS credits in the project base. The project cluster as such will not be listed in your final exam papers - it will be the project title that is registered in your diploma.

Content
Concept Development with Industry aims to introduce and apply an evidence-based approach to the development of concepts for digital media products and management of these development processes in an authentic organisational context.

The student needs to understand the key similarities and differences between concept development and product development. The lectures and readings will introduce methods from ideation and preliminary investigations to systematic concept development leading to a concept and accompanying business case that can be pitched internally within the organisation or presented externally to a potential client. Media concepts are developed with and for potential users, but concept development also takes into consideration the needs and interests of other stakeholders relevant to new media concepts. The students will not be expected to develop full-scale working prototypes but they will be required to sketch models of their concept that can be used for convincing stakeholders of its relevance and realisation potentials.

Concept Development with Industry will focus on the following - introducing key theoretical, methodological and practical approaches within these areas:

- Understanding the concept of concepts
- Different roles for concept developers of digital media products
- Working with and within organisations
- Innovation and ideation within digital media, and creative methods/ techniques to support such processes
- Iterative development processes and project management
- Business models, market and target group considerations
- Presenting and pitching digital media concepts both orally and in writing, and the use of audio/ visual/ textual materials for such purposes.

These areas reflect that concept development within digital media is a highly interdisciplinary field combining insights and methods originally linked to the study and practices of design, business, computer science, communication and organisations. This is in itself also an important understanding that the students should acquire and they will be encouraged to draw upon their knowledge and experiences within the various fields they have come across previously in their studies e.g. to draw upon user-involving methods for group creativity, techniques for sketching prototypes, or knowledge of how to study new media and communication phenomena.

Depending on what is relevant in the specific case chosen for the course, the content may also be adapted to hightlight certain current trends within digital media concept development, such as sustainable development and green design, designing for experience, accessible design, cultural economic trends etc.
Læringsaktiviteter:

The ‘Concept Development with Industry’ module on the 4th semester of the bachelor programme in Digital Media and Design is mandatory for all students in the programme. The study activity in the module is defined as a project of 15 ECTS credits. The project work is organized in this project cluster, combining lectures and students working in groups. All groups will work on a project within the same case from either the public sector or industry. The participating organisation will present the class with an overall challenge and each group will identify a sub-set of this case to work on.

The project cluster will have some similarities with a conventional course but the aim of the readings and activities (lectures, exercises, presentations etc. during the semester) will increasingly be to facilitate and inspire student work on their projects and equip the students to work in depth with both theoretical and methodological aspects within the subject of concept development in relation to their specific industry case.

The student projects will be written in groups. All projects are defined by a project agreement written by the students in a group following the supervisor's instructions. The project agreement must be put in the online project base by the students. All project agreements must be approved by one of the supervisors running the project cluster.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

Following the hand-in of project reports which students have registered in the project base there will be an individual oral project examination for each student held by the ITU supervisor and an external examiner. The student will receive a grade after the oral examination. The grade is based on both the written and oral performance and is given after the Danish 7-point grading scale system.

Litteratur udover forskningsartikler:Litterature for the project cluster has not yet been decided but will combine extracts from textbooks research papers, exemplary cases and instructional material.
