| Læringsmål: | Having completed the course, the student should be able to:
1) Develop research questions that allow for the exploration of a complex field of knowledge in an empirical case of technoscientific controversy.
2) Select methods and tools to explore the empirical case through an iterative process of data generation, analysis, and ethnographic narrative.
3) Interpret visualizations of data and digital traces using the conceptual tools given in the course.
4) Reflect upon the decisions made in the research process and account for their implications.
5) Discuss the coconstitutive relationship between methods, theories, and data within the empirical case. |
| Fagligt indhold: | The course will teach students to describe and analyze complexity within science, technology and innovation through the use of digital methods. A key learning objective is to understand and master the dynamic relation between complexity and visualization. Throughout the course students will experiment with different techniques for generating and visualizing complex knowledge fields. They will learn the basics of actor-network theory and to work data through quali-quantitative approaches. Based on elaborate case work, students will be requested to reflect on how visualizations work as simplifications and on how visualizations may inform organizational decision-making. After the course students will be capable of dealing with, communicate and act constructively in situations faced by complex challenges and without obvious or straightforward solutions presenting themselves. |
| Læringsaktiviteter: | 14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser Each week students have 2x2 hours of lecture and 2x2 hours of exercises (10-14 Tuesdays and 12-16 Fridays).
Lectures will be a mix of regular lectures, skype lectures and case presentations held by the teachers with TA attendance. Apart from lectures held by the anchor teachers guest lecturers will be conducted by experts in the field.
During exercises students will be divided into groups of 20. The groups will work with one TA each and the time will be dedicated to working practically with the topic of the day and preparing for next week’s readings (collect data, outlining of concepts, discuss assignments).
The curriculum is designed to provide students with some basic insights with respect to representation and objectivity in STS. The students will be sensitized to complexity. We first draw on examples of navigating complexity from their own lives in order to later let them work with cases of navigating complexity that focuses on IT innovation in an organizational/business context. Students will learn to distinguish between two main positions with regards to navigating complexity (contrasting moments situating/abstracting). |
| Obligatoriske aktivititer: | There are three mandatory assignments that are required for participation in the final group report and oral exam. These include two short written hand-in assignments and one in-class group presentation for which participation is required. This course is based on a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises. Students are strongly encouraged to attend exercises as these will sometimes include group work in support of the completion of mandatory assignments.
Be aware: The student will receive the grade NA (not approved) at the ordinary exam, if the mandatory activities are not approved and the student will use an exam attempt. |
| Eksamensform og -beskrivelse: | D2G Aflevering med mundtlig eksamen der supplerer projekt. Delt ansvar for projekt., (7-scale, external exam.) Reports are handed in by groups and students are examined as a group and evaluated on the basis of demonstration of fulfilment of the intended learning objectives for the course.
The final report should be 13 pages plus 3 additional pages per student in the group (i.e. a 4 person group will have a 25 page report) excluding front and end matter and figures.
Duration of the oral exam: 30 minutes per student in the group incl. assessment and feedback.
