Formelle forudsætninger:None, though this course will be particularly relevant to students who have some prior training in general communication studies. 
Læringsmål:Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

1) Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the relation between communication and design in the contexts of socially-engaged initiatives.

2) Investigate and apply critical theories in communication and design practices.

3) Articulate effects of 'serious design' in political, economic, and entertainment sectors of society.

4) Conceive and conduct a research project through which they identify a social/serious issue; and for which they plan, design, and document an activist approach to the problem in the form of a ?serious design? product (or event).
 
Fagligt indhold:This course investigates the relation between communication and media exported into the context of socially-engaged design activism. As a correlative to the 'serious games' movement in computer games studies, our focus of study will be 'serious design.' A goal of the course is to produce a definition of 'serious design' and to identify the major elements at work in the rhetorical constellation (communication, ethics, politics, new media, and design) within which it circulates.

Potential topics and areas of study include: architecture, graphic design, propaganda (visual and textual), photography, sculpture, urban design, painting, graffiti, graphic novels (e.g. Maus), design technologies, design manifestos, WPA murals, anti-war design activism, war zone rehabilitation, and green (environmental activist) design, among others.

NB! In the introductory week, meaning from 30 January to 3 February 2006, the course will run from 09:00 to 12:00, where the first lecture will take place. This means that exercises are cancelled in the introductory week.
 

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 13-skala, Ekstern censur

The examination will be based on a synopsis of project turned in at the end of the semester.

The synopsis must be handed in to the Examination Office no later than April 28 2006 at 15:00.
