Læringsmål:• Describe the notion of Social Media within the context of modern societies
• Discuss qualitative data analysis techniques & methods applied to Social Media
• Design and implement relational databases and use Structured Query Language (SQL) to query the database
• Integrate PHP with the database in order to develop small applications that retrieve and display the data in an semantically valid way
• Describe what application programming interfaces (API’s) are and their general usage
• Account for the Twitter API and retrieve Tweets based on various criteria
• Discuss ethical implications of working with social media data
Fagligt indhold:The objective of the course is to do research on a self-chosen research topic in relation to digital material and social media. The students' task is it to work in groups on a self-chosen research question and present their findings creating a website. For the exam every student has to individually write a research report that reflects on learned theoretical concepts and findings (about 10 pages).

In order to do so the course will be organised in two sections. The theoretical section will introduce general concepts in relation to the digital realm. Further, we will look at the changing media landscape and the social context digital media is embedded in. The programming section will take a practical look at how to gather data via the Twitter API.

Both sections run parallel throughout the semester. The theoretical part will be thaught in English, it is an active class consisting of lectures and student-led discussions. Students are required to actively participate in the discussions. The programming part will be thaught in Danish and students are required to hand-in weekly exercises.

The theoretical part will further introduce students to qualitative research methods in order to harness and make sense of the gathered data. Additionally, we will focus on ethical and methodological implications of working with digital data.

The technical part of the course takes a practical look at programming. The course will cover:
- database theory, what are databases,
- practical programming with PHP

During the technical part students will work with the Twitter API (Application Programming Interface) allowing us to query the Twitter API, retrieve Tweets, post statuses, retrieve user information, and store these in our own databases.
While the programming part is hands-on, the theoretical part will help you analyzing your data.
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

Lectures & Practical/analytical exercises.
The students will develop group project that will require them to use both the technical and the theoretical competences acquired during the course. The project will be based on social media data that will be collected, stored and analyzed by the groups. The students will use the data to answer a specific research question identified during the course.

Obligatoriske aktivititer:During the semester the students will be given 12 exercises, and at least 10 of the 12 exercises must be approved.

Be aware: The student will receive the grade NA (not approved) at the ordinary exam, if the mandatory activities are not approved and the student will use an exam attempt.
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:D2G Aflevering med mundtlig eksamen der supplerer projekt. Delt ansvar for projekt., (7-scale, external exam)

The written assignment
