Fagligt indhold: This course will examine the social consequences of mobile communication and the role that mobile communication is playing in the reformulation of everyday life.

Mobile communication is a personal media. Thus the issues surrounding its adoption and use are different from those associated with the so-called mass media (TV, Radio and portions of the Internet). Where, for example TV has
commercialized content with advertisements, mobile communication is often interpersonal and the “content” is simply talk between partners. Where TV programming plays on and even develops various cultural icons, mobile
communication plays on our familiarity with our interlocutor.

Historically speaking, mobile communication – as represented by cell phone technology – is the first time that it is easily possible to receive or send a message from one who is not at a fixed geographic location. Mobile
communication also individualizes communication. Rather than calling a home or an office, you call an individual.

This, in itself, means that it changes the way in which we think about safety and security. It changes our ideas about how we coordinate meetings and social interactions. It also changes the way in which teens experience emancipation
from their parents; our sense of what is an appropriate way to behave in the public sphere and the topography of our social networks.

The course will look into alternative ideas about how the situation will develop. Among other things, specific topics include:
  • The social consequences of mobile communication (safety, coordination, emancipation, disturbance of the public sphere, the possible balkanizing of the social group)
  • Mobile communication and social capital
  • The adoption and use of new mobile communication technologies
  • International perspectives on mobile communication
  • Differences between mass and interpersonal communication,
  • The theoretical dimensions of ICT adoption

The course will also introduce and provide training in some basic methodologies in the social sciences.
