Læringsmål:After the course the student should be able to describe, analyze, reflect on and critically analyze the following themes
1) The historical development of mobile communication.
2) The functioning of mobile telephone handsets.
3) The interaction between mobile telephone handsets and the mobile communications network.
4) The processes of gathering and analyzing data (both qualitative and quantitative).
5) The role of mobile communication in the social sphere.
6) The function of of mobile communication in today´s society.
7) The use of location-based services.
8) The role of the mobile phone in the Global South and its impact on economy, social relations, and the lives of women.
9) The position of mobile communication in the lives of teens.
10) The global context associated with mobile communication. 
Fagligt indhold:The course will cover the following elements:
Introduction to the specialization
• Mobile communication, ubiquitous computing and the focus of the specialization •The history of mobile communication
The social dimensions of mobile communication
• Location based services •Coordination
• Youth culture
• Mobile communication in the Global South
• Gender and mobile communication
The basics of mobile data analysis
• Qualitative methods
• Quantitative methods
• Data collection
Overview of mobile technology
• Handset level
• Network level 
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

14 weeks teaching including lectures, reading discussions and exercises .

The teachers are responsible for organizing the seminars, finding relevant readings, and preparing the exams. It is the responsibility of the student to be an active participant in the class, having read the expected material and be ready to discuss it, answering any related questions.

The course will have the following mandatory assignments:
1. At least eight blog posts on class readings
2. Student presentation/discussion questions (once a semester).
3. Students must write a final paper by completing a series four individual assignments:

A one paragraph statement of your proposed topic. Due in class Wednesday 21 March.

An annotated initial list of 5 sources relevant to your topic; at least 3 of these must be scholarly journals or books. (Due in class Wednesday 28 March). Information on what a scholarly source is can be found at: http://www.instruction.greenriver.edu/bahl/E112/scholarly.htm

Final paper due. The final version of your paper is due at the exam office Wednesday 16 May. The deadline is 15:00. The paper is to be handed in at the exam office. 

Obligatoriske aktivititer:1. Blog posts. Make a summary of the readings in 8 of the 12 weeks where there are academic readings (the two weeks with the technical material there are readings but they are more net-based).
2. Text presentation. Make a presentation (perhaps with another student) of the readings for a class and lead a discussion including the development of discussion questions (once a semester).
3. Short paper. Write a short 3 to 5 page individual paper on a topic associated with mobile communication:

5) Final paper. The final paper is due in class on Tuesday 30 April. 
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

The final exam for this class will be a written, short answer exam where the student will be asked to:

1) Answer 5 of 10 questions based on material from the lecture and
2) Answer 5 of 10 questions based on the readings.

There will be a concrete answer for each of the specific questions in the readings or in the lectures. If the student recites gives the basic elements of the material, they will a middle grade. If they elaborate on the content of the specific elements then they will receive more credit and if they synthesize the material and integrate it with other material from the course they will receive the highest credit for the particular question.
We will work out the specific readings questions and the lecture questions in each of the exam periods collectively. That is the students and the teacher will develop a set of 3 - 5 readings questions and 3 – 5 lecture questions during the last part of the session.
