Familiarity with business psychology in general is desired but not required. This course is primarily designed to meet the needs of:

1. Students of E-Business and Information Systems.

2. Students of human-computer interaction, human factors, engineering psychology, and/or philosophy of the mind.

3. Business professionals who desire to know about practical applications of human information processing.

Læringsmål: The objective of this course is to enable students to understand basic research findings in the field of human information processing and apply them to business and technology settings. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Understand the issues, topics, and aspects of the cognitive sciences in general and human information processing in particular.

2. Identify and discuss the basic research findings in human information processing with respect to human sensation, perception, attention, memory, knowledge representation & organization, language, decision-making, problem-solving, reasoning, and creativiy.

3. Analyze, apply, and evaluate basic research findings in human information processing to business and technology environments.
Fagligt indhold:Students of management information systems (MIS) in general and e-business in particular usually learn about the design, development, deployment, use, evaluation, and impact of various business information systems such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relations management (CRM), etc. Specifically, MIS and e-Business students learn about the ways in which information systems and human actors intertwine and entangle in business and technology settings. However, despite the thorough knowledge about how computers and organizations process information, the human mind remains a veritable black-box. As a result, a critical concern is that present students and future managers of human knowledge workers and information systems might lack crucial understanding of how human beings process information.

This course addresses the above concern by empowering students with knowledge, skills and abilities with regard to human information processing. A deep understanding of human perception, attention, memory, categorization, decision-making, problem-solving etc. and their relation to human performance in business and technological settings is the primary focus of this course.

The course reading list consists of two textbooks, a laboratory book for in-class exercises, and selected research articles. The course is structured into two major parts. The first part offers a traditional lecture-based instruction on the topic of human information processing and an advanced graduate seminar of the main topics of inquiry in human information processing. The second and final part of the course covers three specific business and technology applications of basic findings in human information processing covered in the first part of the course. Further, in individual or small-group class projects, students will work on practical application of basic research findings to practical matters of their own professional and/or academic concern.

The preliminary plan for lectures and exercises is at http://www.itu.dk/people/rkva/HIP/
