Kursusbeskrivelse
Kursusnavn (dansk):Mobil- og sensorsystemteknologi
Kursusnavn (engelsk):Mobile and Sensor Systems Technology
Semester:Efterår 2005
Udbydes under:cand.it., medieteknologi og spil (mtg)
Omfang i ECTS:7,50
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:http://www.itu.dk/courses/MMST/E2005/index.html
Min. antal deltagere:
Forventet antal deltagere:25
Maks. antal deltagere:80
Formelle forudsætninger:Unfortunately, the course is cancelled. Interested students are most welcome to sign up for the project cluster "Mobile and Sensor Systems Technology".

As a prerequisite for this course it is required that the student has completed the course Introductory Programming and at least one more course within programming. Furthermore it is desirably but not necessary that the student has completed the course Image Analysis or Signal Processing.
Thus the participant should be able to construct and test a small Java program
and should know the concept of a protocol and the layered architectures of network protocols.

Læringsmål:The objecive of this course is, from the application point of view, to teach the understanding of Wireless Local Area Networks, Wireless Personal Area Networks, Wireless Sensor Networks, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and examples of functional extensions of these systems. The common basis for the functions of these seemingly very different systems is emphasized.

Having completed this course the student is able to
- understand the common principles behind wireless propagation in a selection
of seemingly very different mobile environments such as Wireless Local Area
Networks (WLAN), Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) including
Bluetooth,, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) Systems.
- understand the common principles governing the design of systems
using WLAN, WPAN, WSN and RFID, and furthermore design such a system.
- understand the selection of principles for applying WLAN, WPAN, WSN for
extracting positioning information in an indoor environment.
- decide which network is to be recommended for a specified application
domaine.
- specify a wireless network, given detailed information on the application
domaine aimed at.
Fagligt indhold:The course is devided into Part I and Part II.

The Part I consists of 6 lectures on the following subjects:
- The in- and outdoor wireless propagation environment.
- Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication protocol IEEE 802.11b.
- Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) communication protocol IEEE
802.15.4, Bluetooth IEEE 802.15.1.
- The architecture and protocol used in a practical Wireless Sensor Network.
- Principles for design of systems using WLAN, WPAN or WSN protocols.
- Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), communication range, sensitivity, system
configurations.
- Methods for indoor positioning using Wireless Local Area Networks.

Part II consists of exercises where it is possible to either study the wireless network architectures for mobile systems or study the algorithms and signal processing methods, used for filtering and detection of signals, measured in wireless sensor networks. To complete the course one of the exercises Exercise 1 or Exercise 2 must be completed.

Exercise 1: “Applying a Wireless Sensor Network for Data Acquisition”.
or
Exercise 2: “Designing a Filtering and Detection Algorithm for a Wireless
Sensor Network”.

Læringsaktiviteter:

The course is constituted by Part I with lectures and Part II with exercises within one of two specified areas. Exercise 1 does not require mathematics and Exercise 2 requires mathematics, corresponding to the level of the course Image and Signal Processing or the Courses Image Processing or Signal Processing.

NB! In the introductory week, meaning from 29 August to 2 September 2005, the course will run from 16:00 to 18:30, where the first lecture will take place. This means, that there will be no exercises in the introductory week

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 13-skala, Ekstern censur

Participation in Part I lectures and completion of a report on the Part II Exercise 1 or Exercise 2. Oral examination.
