Læringsmål:After this course, students should be able to:
• Recognize and describe the level at which different user practices are developed: Society, institution or individual.
• Identify and make informed decisions about relevant methods for studying user practices in select networks.
• Isolate and explore the technological and social challenges inherent in certain practices.
• Identify and analyse design challenges in developing structures for engagement at varying levels.
Fagligt indhold:This course will enable the students to, on an advanced level, understand and analyse user behaviours and practices on an individual, organizational and societal context, and expand their methodological toolbox as well as conceptual understanding, building on the knowledge they have gained in the “Users in Context” course. The main focus of this module is to enable students to study and engage with users where they are, and to understand how users relate to each other in everyday life through the use of digital services and designs. Students will identify and map user practices, as they emerge in the interplay between local culture(s), institutional frameworks and global trends. They will learn to analyse the specific social affordances and constraints of digital services and platforms. They will work with network theory and community studies, affect theory, play studies, discourse analysis, social media studies and other theoretical perspectives which will enable them to discuss and reflect on in which ways designers and organisations can inform and are already impacting user culture, through for instance digitalisation processes and engagement strategies. The students will also learn how to study digital services and platforms from a users’ perspective with a specific focus on users’ understanding of digital privacy and ethics.

The course will look at user practices from three different viewpoints: Global, institutional and local. The course exercises will focus on research methods for networked media.
