The students are expected to have basic knowledge in the areas of organization theory, marketing, and information systems, equivalent to a bachelor¿s degree from CBS.
Læringsmål: Outsourcing, global competition and collaboration, open source software, market monopolies, local government and international regulation, and mobile devices are some of the challenges and opportunities facing entrepreneurs in today¿s rapidly changing society. Both EU and the Danish government regard SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) as having a strong potential in the ICT (information and communication technology) market.

The course will provide an inspiration and opportunity for students who consider venturing into new software businesses, covering the most important topics to be dealt with in this area. Relevant theories, techniques, and real-life examples will be presented and discussed, and provided with this background students will develop, describe and analyze new software-based businesses, based on their own visions and ideas.

Fagligt indhold: The course is based on four themes as detailed below

Entrepreneurship
Venturing into software business, an entrepreneur faces several challenges. The necessary funds must be estimated and provided, but also the issues of organizational development, knowledge management, networking and innovation must be taken into consideration. The course will present theories, techniques, and real-life case stories to help students to cope with these challenges.

Based on Belbin¿s theory of team roles, the students will be introduced to theories and techniques for creating entrepreneurial teams with strong capabilities for cooperation and goal achievement.

What are the characteristics of entrepreneurship in knowledge-intensive businesses, and how can knowledge processes (sharing and creating knowledge) be managed?

Software for business
Selling software products is only one of a wide spectrum of software-based business models, and the course will present several of these, including business models based on open source software.

When developing consumer- and market-oriented software products, many traditional software development methods prove inadequate, and the course will present methods and techniques specifically supporting development of marketable software products.

Marketing
Markets do not exist for the taking, they are created. Markets can be seen as knowledge structures, connecting supply and demand, and constantly evolving throughout their life cycles. In order to avoid obsolescence, old markets must persistently be developed and new markets must be created. An important aspect in this respect is the development of infrastructures for distribution and communication.

Law
Legal aspects of software businesses: In what ways do national and international law influence software-based business models? Important fields in this context are: copyright laws, patents, licenses, government and international regulations of standards etc.

Læringsaktiviteter:

The course will consist of three, partly overlapping phases:

An introductory phase with lectures and seminars, presentation and discussion of literature
A project phase in which the students in groups (4 to 5 persons) and under teacher supervision develop, describe and analyze a new software-based business, based on students¿ visions and ideas. There will also be a number of seminars, where the groups present and evaluate preliminary results and exchange experiences. Finally, there will be a number of lectures and seminars with presentation and discussion of additional, relevant literature.
A report phase where project groups finalize their reports.
The course contains a total of 11 teaching sessions: one session with three classes (45 minutes), and ten sessions with six classes each. It is expected that a number of these classes will be supervision of group projects and they will be planned ad hoc. Students are expected to not only partake in their own group¿s project work but also in presentations and discussion of literature and review of other groups¿ results.

Teachers from several departments (Informatics, Law, and Marketing) will participate in the course. A small ¿pivot group¿ of 2 to 3 teachers will conduct project supervision and course coordination.
