Social practices in public and private enterprises as well as public institutions are increasingly understood as organized activities manageable by theories developed within the field of organization studies. At the same time the field has thrived dynamically not least under influence of the spreading of information technology in enterprises and society and the challenges it poses.
The course introduces to the field of organization theory including newer developments that build on a process perspective. The course will address how the various theories centre on certain topics such as work, thought, action, cognition, technology, practice or complexity and how they deal with such topics analytically. We will examine the implications of various theoretical approaches. Thus the objectives of the course are to introduce students to theories of organizations from early developments in the twentieth century to comtemporary debates, and enable students to identify organisation theories, their origins, importance and analytical implications, in theory and in organizations and the world we live in.
