The course is designed so that the student should develop understanding of the relationship between IT and sustainability as well as gain capabilities and skills in the area.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:
• Describe, classify and critically discuss the relationship between IT and sustainability in general, including empirical evidence.
• Describe, classify and critically discuss the course’s concepts, methods, models and theories.
• Apply these concepts, methods, models and theories to real world cases.
• Conduct real life field study of Sustainable IT.
• Conduct evaluation of Sustainable IT.
• Critically reflecting upon the theories used and provide suggestions for synthesizes of theories to better explain, predict or describe the problem at hand.

Fagligt indhold: In relation to sustainability, IT can both be part of the problem and part of the solution. Already today 2% of all global CO2-emissions come directly from IT and recent reports shows that waste of used IT consists an increasingly large environmental problem. On the other hand IT is a driver for more sustainable business. Sustainable IT improves resource utilization and efficiency, provides information on emission footprint to guide consumers, and enables completely new, sustainable, business models. The Danish minister of science claims that Sustainable IT is one of the future competitive advantages for Denmark.

The course provides an inspiration and opportunity for students who seek to understand how IT can be used to reduce environmental impact and enable socially fair business. Theories, techniques, concepts, models, frameworks and real-life examples will be presented and discussed. Provided this background students will develop, describe and analyze the relationship between IT and sustainability.

Læringsaktiviteter:12 forelæsninger + lejlighedsvis øvelser i forbindelse med undervisningen

12 Lectures
10 Workshops/Exercises
Last semester the students conducted 10 case studies on use of IT for sustainability in some of the largest Danish companies. The studies were combined into a book on IT and Sustainability that will be the starting point in the fall 2010. This semester the study of IT and Sustainability will be extended. Potential areas of extension include companies that operate with sustainable business models, companies providing sustainable IT solutions, and public organizations. Exactly what will be studied is subject to some degree of flexibility and is to be decided upon together with the students.
12 lectures will introduce and catalyze the students’ knowledge creation. Students will have to prepare for lectures by reading thematic articles and present them in class.
