Forventet antal deltagere:15
Maks. antal deltagere:24
Formelle forudsætninger:the student must be able to

  • Design, implement and test small imperativeprograms, preferable in Java
  • Be able to construct programs from given smaller programs/program-templates and a description of their functionalities
  • Work with functions and real numbers

The above requirements may be optained by completing
mathematics at highschool A level or equivalent and taking an introductionary programming course based on Java.

Læringsmål:Having completed the course the student is able to:

  • Understand principles for software construction for mobile systems with constrained resources (network, power, memory) based on Java Micro Edition (J2E). This part is given by the course Java on Mobile Apparatus.

  • Explain the fundamental functions, which constitute the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) IEEE 802.11x, x= space,a,b.

  • Explain the fundamental limitations imposed by the wireless medium and carry out a Site Survey for installation of a WLAN.

  • Explain the fundamental methods for indoor position estimation of a mobile computer using a WLAN 802.11.

  • Explain the principles of shared resources in mobile networks, exemplified by Java's Jini framework.

  • Program and demonstrate the use of a virtual teleconference system using audio/video streams, implemented in Java Media Framework (JMF).

Fagligt indhold:Lectures:

General problems and methods used for construction of software for resource constrained mobile systems, introducing Java Micro Edition.
These lectures are given by the course Java on Mobile Apparatus.

The architecture of the IEEE 802.11x, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) for 2,11 or 55 Mbit/sec. communication:

  • Access point; independent basic service set, infrastructure basic service set; distribution system;
  • frame format; Medium Access Control (MAC);
  • timing, beacon, frequency hopping, and synchronization;
  • power save functions; the wireless medium, multipath propagation, and interference; wireless local area network site survey.

Indoor position estimation of mobile computer using information derived from the IEEE 802.11x WLAN. Signal strength model for position localization.

Java Media Framework and its data audio/video formats.

Exercises:

Exercise 1: Introduction to J2ME, XML and Sun J2ME Wireless Toolkit. This exercise is given by the course Java on Mobile Apparatus.

Exercise 2: Introduction to Java Media Framework (JMF).

Exercise 3: A Teleconference System using JMF.

Læringsaktiviteter:

Lectures, hands-on exercises. 2-3 Mini-projects.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 13-skala, Intern censur

Oral examination with 0.5 hour preparation, with access to the course material and notes.
Grading: 13 points grading.
External Censor.
The duration of the examination is approx. 20 minutes.
Hands-on exercises must be approved (pass/fail) prior to the oral examination. The exercises are handed in no later than the last day in the 12 weeks course period.
