Læringsmål:• Describe the notion of social media and social network sites within the context of Internet Studies and Communication Studies.
• Discuss data analysis techniques & methods applied to Social Media.
• Design and implement relational databases and use Structured Query Language (SQL) to query the database.
• Integrate PHP with the database in order to develop small applications that retrieve and display the data in an semantically valid way.
• Describe what application programming interfaces (API’s) are and their general usage.
• Account for the Twitter API and retrieve Tweets based and various criteria.
• Describe the practical and theoretical usage of HTML5/CSS3 and apply them in practice
• Analyse the Ethical implication of the developed software tool. 
Fagligt indhold:The course will be organised into a theoretical and a practical part. The two parts will run parallel throughout the semester.
The theoretical part of the course will introduce the concept of network, social network sites and social media. It will focus on the most diffuse platforms Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia. At the same time it will present existing tools and researches dealing with social media pointing out limits and possibilities of online data usage. Throughout the course we will also focus on the ethical and methodological implications of working with online social media data.
The focus of the technical part of the course is a practical look at programming. The course will cover:
- database theory, what are databases,
- practical programming with PHP
- HTML5 from a semantic point of view.

During the course we will work with the Twitter API (Application Programming Interface) allowing us to query the Twitter API, retrieve Tweets, post statuses, retrieve user information, and store these in our own databases.
We will work with HTML5 from a semantic point of view, focusing on the parts of the HTML5 spec that are ready for primetime.

14 weeks of teaching consisting of lectures, exercises and supervision
- Lectures by the teacher, guest talks, student presentations and ongoing discussions.
- Group work in connection with the exercises, and from mid - course focused on the examination project.
- Practical / analytical exercises that the groups work with during the exercise session and after.
