Bachelor Global Business Informatics

Læringsmål: NOTE: This desrcription is preliminary and subject to changes before the course start

After the course, students should be able to:

  • Account for the capabilities of a database system and its place in an IT infrastructure.
  • Enumerate principal targets in database design and implementation, and evaluate designs in relation to the targets.
  • Compare architectures in use in the industry for maintaining and accessing large data quantities.
  • Account for which features of database systems are supported in various architectures, and in what settings they are relevant.
  • Recognize common methods for describing and visualizing data schemas, and interpret graphical and textual representations.
  • Relate basic techniques for accomplishing efficient data retrieval and concurrent processing in database systems to practical requirement that they can help fulfill.
  • Evaluate and choose security measures for protecting the integrity and consistency of databases.
  • Handle elementary use of a database system.

Fagligt indhold: Maintaining databases is one of the main uses of computer technology. It ranges from simple unstructured files for single users to sophisticated multi-tier architectures for large organizations, with advanced support for recovery, security, concurrency, etc. Traditionally, the database discipline is taken to encompass primarily technologies suitable for constructing robust database systems designed for large data sets with complex interdependencies, and methods for implementing clean and consistent databases using such systems. Much of the content of this course focuses on mainstream database technologies and methods (for example relational databases, the entity-relationship model, concurrency, recovery), but it also includes a broader perspective on data storage. We study elementary data structures used for efficient storage and retrieval of data, emerging techniques for data storage using Internet services, and methods for keeping data secure from malevolent intrusion. The primary goal is to provide an orientation around the diverse and heterogeneous techniques used for various databases in our communication-intensive globalized world.
