Formelle forudsætninger:This course is part of the third semester of the bachelor's degree in digital media and design.
Læringsmål:After the course the student should be able to:

• Account for different methods of co-design and discuss potentials and disadvantages of the methods
• Plan and execute a co-design process consisting of qualitative and ethnographically oriented studies of everyday life and work practice and co-design method(s).
• Propose a ‘research plan’ in the form of a pitch to execute a bigger study.
• Document, analyze and present the user study and the user’ involvement in the design process.
• Reflect on theoretical aspects of qualitative user studies and the involvement of the user in the design
• Reflect on the practical aspects of conducting user studies and on the selected methods of co-design.
Fagligt indhold:This course will introduce you to the field and methods of co-design and teach you to reflect on and apply methods of co-design.

This course will teach you to investigate and understand aspects of everyday life of human beings in connection with digital media design and artifacts. It may as well be work life as everyday life.

It will teach you as a designer how to approach analysis of the needs and opportunities of a target group.

The course will draw on a mixture of approaches, giving you background knowledge of, and hands-on experience with, a wide variety of methods for studying, involving and co-creating innovative design solutions for/with user representatives. You will also be introduced to some of the drivers behind user involvement in design.

With a design assignment as the outset, you and a small group will analyze a certain group of people’s needs, wants and dreams in a given area as well as involving the in the design process.

This could be e.g. to analyze the exercise habits and needs a group of elderly citizens as part of their life situation, with the aim of designing digital artifacts or media, stimulating exercise in a positive manner to achieve better quality of life.

The other part of this project would be to plan and prepare a presentation of (a pitch for) an extended design process where the users are active drivers or co-designers.
Læringsaktiviteter:

24 lecture series + 20 exercise sessions
The course last 15 weeks.

The 12 weeks have 2 weekly sessions with lectures and exercises. The students will work within a predefined case area, but with individual target groups.
The last weeks of the course will focus more extensively on the assignment. Throughout the course there will be supervision.
The lectures present different methods and discuss the practical implications and the theoretic framework behind the methods.
The exercises are partly small exercises related to the themes and partly exercises that relates to the overall assignment.

The exercises and the assignment are performed in groups of 4-5 students.

Failure to hand in these mandatory assignments on time will mean that the registration for examination is annulled.
These mandatory assignments are:

: Each group hands in 2 pages that describe the problem, the chosen methods and the reason behind choosing the methods. Deadline is September 25.

Exam form:
External examiner, 7-point marking scale, B4: Oral examination with written work, without time for preparation at the exam.
Group report (15 – 20 pages) documenting the project work and the research plan proposal.
Individual report (4 pages) reflecting on the theoretical and practical aspects of the methods used.
Group presentations of the project work done including the design/research plan and pitch.
Individual presentations reflecting on the theoretical and practical aspects of methods used.

Harvard system is used for referencing etc.
