Læringsmål:The aim of this course is to introduce the basic system components and analysis methods for mobile systems
targeted for transport (streaming) of multimedia
(audio/video) data in a Java programming environment.
Further specialization following this course might be
acquired in courses related to Distributed Systems,
Parallel Systems, Image Analysis and Speech and Audio
technology.


 
Fagligt indhold:The course focuses on the following three areas



Wireless Networks:

Introduction to wireless local area networks (WLAN),
exemplified by the transmission standard IEEE 802.11
(1 Mbit/sec. to 11 Mbit/sec.). Fundamental concepts:
access point; principles of protocols, distribution
system; roaming; frequency allocation; interference,
throughput and reliability, location estimation.

Basic guidelines for using/designing a WLAN.



Mobile Multimedia Streaming:

Introduction to Java Media Framework for managing, acquisition, processing and delivering of time-based
media data (audio/video) with types such as: AUI, GSM,
MIDI, MPEG, QuickTime, WAV. Introducing the time model,
push and pull data sources and codecs.



Hands on exercise on using Java Media Framework for a
wireless network streaming application between a mobile
and a stationary unit.



Mobile Distributed Systems:

Introduction to shared resources in mobile networks
including mobile code and lookup-services; exemplified
in Java's JINI framework.
Modelling shared resources in mobile networks; exemplified
in the Ambient Calculus.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 13-skala, Intern censur

Completed exercise.

Oral examination with initial 0.5 hour preparation based on the course materials.
