Formelle forudsætninger:B1 Strategic and tactical tools for E-business or an equivalent course.
Læringsmål: M-business will train students to become future managers of mobile service provisioning. The overall aim is to promote skills in systemic thinking at the interface between users, technology and business necessary for successful development and introduction of pervasive product-service offerings; i.e. mobile devices, services and applications.

Students will learn about players and components enabling ubiquitous commerce and m-service provisioning. Upon completion of the course, the students will hold practical abilities and theoretical understanding of opportunities and challenges wireless technologies (current wireless standards and emerging technologies) present to innovation and user appropriation. Students will also gain knowledge of currently popular (i.e. premium SMS) and emerging (i.e. location based, payment enabling etc.) mobile services. Insight is provided through real-life work with contemporary cases pertaining to market implementation and commercialization of 3G architectures and services, mobile service development, portal and platforms for service delivery, context dependent mobile services, and market opportunity comprehension for emerging technologies (e.g. WiFi, WiMax, Zigbee, Software Radio etc.).

To support the case work, lectures will be offered in three modules; wireless technologies, wireless value networks, and wireless service innovation and appropriation.

The course will be particularly useful for students aiming to work with wireless media and technologies in information and telecommunications industries. Good command of English is recommended as all lectures are taught in English and all written and oral student contributions will be in English.

Fagligt indhold: The course will consist of one introduction lecture, ten regular lectures and one summary lecture.

1. Intro: Wireless Service History; the World and Scandinavia. Service types and their diffusion.

Existing and Emerging Wireless Technologies
2. The essential wireless technologies I ¿ current standards and generations
3. The essential wireless technologies II ¿ emerging technologies / standards
4. Architectures for pervasive/ubiquitous computing and commerce

Wireless Value Networks
5. The Wireless Value Networks
6. Players and business models
7. Resources, relations, interdependencies and network effects

Wireless Service Innovation and Appropriation
8. Market and Network Oriented Wireless Service Innovation;
9. Appropriation, use, users, and context
10. Properties and gratifications of `apps¿ and `killer apps¿.
11. Innovating on properties and gratifications
12. Summary lecture

The course starts by providing insight to the history of mobile and other wireless services, the different types of services and their diffusion in Scandinavia and elsewhere. Then it moves to provide technical understanding of the existing (GSM, W-CDMA, WiFi etc.) and emerging (WiMAX, Zigbee etc.) wireless technologies. Focus will be on establishing a profound technical understanding of the enabling elements of wireless data services. Specifications and features of existing and new wireless technologies, standards and architectures will be outlined. During the four first lectures we will also enter into the field of pervasive computing and standard setting.

The third module will outline the key players constituting the wireless value network. Focus will be on different players, their business models and how interdependencies foster a need for partnerships. It seeks to develop the students¿ comprehension of current and emerging business models in the wireless arena. In particular, the students will be introduced to how wireless venturing often involves different players constituting value networks that both compete and cooperate in the marketplace. The aim here is to enable the students to understand how the boundaries of the firm become dynamic and how collaboration between firms regarding products, services and activities is imperative for value networks to grow.

In the four lectures before our final summarizing lecture the topic will be wireless service innovation and appropriation. Here we set focus on market learning (explicit versus inchoate aspects), innovation and the process of appropriation. The students will enter into the challenging problems of balancing technological opportunities with user requirements and demands. It will also address the role of user-knowledge in technological adaptation and appropriation.

Students are expected to present their analysis and engage in discussions during the lectures and contribute with an individual or group presentation.
