It is also assumed that the students have a basic understanding of IT.
Læringsmål: The course provides a strategic perspective on the development, use and management of IT. After completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • take part in strategic planning using IT in different business contexts

  • take a proactive role in proposing relevant tools and techniques for using IT on a strategic level

  • formulate strategies where IT plays an important role

  • argue the case of the relevance of IT for business leaders

Fagligt indhold:In May of 2003, Harvard Business Review published an article 'IT doesn't matter', which caused one of the most heated debates among IT practitioners, researchers and strategists. Is IT really only a commodity providing at most a more important infra-structure, as Nicolas Carr argued.

This course will start by debating the arguments of Carr, and will go on to show in what way he is wrong. The rest of the course will focus on how and in what way IT has strategic importance, and accordingly how IT strategy and planning is or should be an integrated part of the overall strategy planning in any organization.

We shall start by investigating the concept of business model, and will show how the different business models have strategic importance. Some of these will even pave the way for new types of businesses and new markets.

A number of models for looking at the alignment between the IT and business strategy will be discussed.

We shall also investigate the challenges of leading networked businesses using IT, and leading the IT function in existing and future businesses. Part of this challenge will be to decide on the strategy for IT-outsourcing/off-shoring

Finally, the course will deal with the new concept of IT-governance.

In the course we shall use a standard text-book on 'Corporate Information strategy and Management", but we shall augment this with a number of tools and techniques for strategic management, partly from a textbook in Strategy, partly from a list of articles. Furthermore, in almost every 3 hour sesion, we shall have either a case or guest lectures rrom industry, presenting strategic issues where IT plays an important role.

Students should only sign up for this course if they are prepared to study prior to coming to class, since case-teaching is used for a significant part of the lectures.
