Formelle forudsætninger:The course is the 2nd part of the Specialisation on Systems Development. It requires participation in the course System Development I.

The theoretical course is taught in coordination with the VIPS course (Advanced IT Project Management and Software Engineering) which allows for participation based on qualifications comparable to the course on Systems Development I.

Læringsmål:The project part of the course should consist of either an empirical study allowing to relate and confront research literature and industrial practice, or a literature study or technical implementation project geared towards deepening the understanding of an advanced topic in systems development.
The theoretic part of the course intends to provide deepened knowledge on central themes of current interest in the area of System Development thus complementing the project part with a theoretical perspective. The concrete contents of the course is is chosen to represent both topics currently discussed in practice and hot topics in research. The final selection of topics will be chosen to cover and connect the areas of use, technical implementation and development processes.
Besides giving additional insight into software engineering as a discipline, the course introduces research methods and techniques.

Thus, after having read the course you should be able to:
1- Perform a small empirical study, a literature study or a small study based on technical prototyping.
2- Search for, find and discuss state-of-the-art literature, conference papers and journal articles in systems development that are relevant for the topic of the project.
3- Be able to relate the own research question to the state of the art. Discuss research methodology relevant for the project implemented and evaluate the quality of the own research.
 
Fagligt indhold:The topic of projects will be decided by the student (groups) in consultance with the course teachers. The topic should deepen a specific aspect of system development.
For the theoretical part, the final selection of topics for the course will take place in coordination with the students participating in the course.
The contents of the course could e.g. include:
- Flexible software development methods like eXtreme programming, and agile development
- Software process improvement, maturity models and software quality.
- Use-oriented software development
- Design in use: how does the software and the organisation interact when introducing a new system.
- Introduction of IT systems in organisations.
- Software evolution and the deployment of end-user tailorable systems
- End User Development
- Productification of software, design and development of software products
- Knowledge management in Software Engineering
- Off-shore outsourcing

The course might contain additional topics chosen by the students themselves.  
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

The tuition will take place combining independent project related research, lectures, home work, group discussions and other didactical methods. The theoretical part of the course partly builds on the students reading and presenting research articles. It will also address research skill, e.g. how to search for, find, and read state-of-the-art articles, as well as trying out techniques within the topics choosen for the course.

In order to graduate as a MSc in ITO, you need to pass the ITO backbone courses, and also take a 22,5 ECTS specialization and two 7,5 ECTS electives.
