Min. antal deltagere:12
Forventet antal deltagere:15
Maks. antal deltagere:25
Formelle forudsætninger:The course is part of the AC algorithm specialization. It can be taken either before or after Algorithm Design and Algorithm Design Project, and even as an elective on the bachelor's level, but at least an introductory algorithms course is needed. Groups should to the extent possible have uniform prerequisites.
Læringsmål:The course aims to prepare students for a thesis in algorithms or related topics. In particular, by working on a small research problem agreed upon with a supervisor, the students will learn to:

- Read research papers related to a given topic.
- Extract and explain main results of research papers such that it is understandable by their peers.
- Plan and carry out a small-scale investigation of an algorithmic research problem. This investigation could be theoretical, experimental, or both.
- Describe the findings of the project in the form of a scientific paper (e.g., containing abstract, introduction, related work, theory, experiments, conclusion, and literature list).

Each project group should agree on a problem-specific set of intended learning outcomes with their supervisor, and make this part of the project decription.
Fagligt indhold:A number of project supervisors will each propose one or more project ideas, typically related to on-going research. For each such idea there will be a number of research papers, and possibly other resources, that students need to read to be able to do the project.

The project must be done in groups of at least 2 students. Students who did not find a group on their own will form groups as decided by the course administrator. Since each supervisor has limited capacity each group should give a prioritized list of project ideas, one for each supervisor, after which a best matching will be found.

While most of the project will be done separately for each project group, we will be using peer feedback to support the learning goal "Extract and explain main results of research papers such that it is understandable by [...] peers". There may also be joint supervision meetings for groups working on related topics.
Læringsaktiviteter:

This course is based on project work with supervision in group of two students or more.
Each group must agree on a project description with their supervisor in the beginning of the course and the project description has to be approved by the supervisor no later than the 13th of February.
