Kursusbeskrivelse
Kursusnavn (dansk):3D-begynder
Kursusnavn (engelsk):Introductory 3D
Semester:Efterår 2008
Udbydes under:cand.it., digital design og kommunikation (ddk)
Omfang i ECTS:7,50
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://learnit.itu.dk
Min. antal deltagere:12
Forventet antal deltagere:35
Maks. antal deltagere:35
Formelle forudsætninger:The student needs to have fundamental knowledge of image editing.

Læringsmål:
  • To obtain basic knowledge of how 3D CGI technology is used in two main media: 1) Animation films 2) Interactive 3D games.
  • To acquire knowledge regarding theory and history of 3D CGI by experiencing various projects in the two main media.
    
  • To acquire fundamental skills in creating 3D CGI models and animation for different projects from pre-production (f.e. concepts, storyboard, character design, set plan, etc) to production (f.e. model, lighting, texture, animation, camera, render, editing, etc).
  • To understand the challenges of using 3D CGI and how to effectively apply it.

  • The course's practical goals:
  • Students are able to analyze and evaluate both projects discussed in the class and projects produced by themselves and others.
  • Students are able to deliver a finished exam project demonstrating fundamental techniques in 3D CGI in modeling (texturing and lighting included) and animation.

  • Fagligt indhold:The class uses mainly 3D modeling and animation software, 3DS Max.

It will be taught introductory, fundamental theory and techniques in modeling and animation.

One class consists of two hours lecture and two hours exercise time:

In the lecture, different animation techniques will be shown and analyzed, via various films and selected computer games. Animation theories and topics will be introduced and discussed, from traditional and experimental concepts to present day 3D CGI technology.

In the exercise time, students will follow hands-on techniques using 3DS Max and other available software in order to do basic tutorials in modeling and animation.Level 1 exercises are mandatory.

In week 46 there will be on-line presentation where students are asked to present their project concepts and work in progress on the web.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

Students are asked to deliver an exam project at the end of the semester, which consists of two parts:
    1) a written assessment of interests, challenges, and theoretical analysis/background of the project

    2) a finished project in a form of movie/VR file, interactive media, or other agreed media format.

The project must state the main focus/problem/interests/thesis statement regarding 3D CGI and be able to demonstrate the fundamental skill requirements set by the class.
