Formelle forudsætninger:MTG's first semester course Game Design or equivalent (contact the instructors if you’re unsure about your qualifications).
Læringsmål:After the course the student should be able to:

1) Enunciate differences and similarities between analog and digital games
2) Identify trends and innovations in analog game design and relate them to digital games
3) Analyze, describe and create systems and mechanics designed to influence specific player behaviors
4) Assess game balance (and intentional imbalance)
5) Rapidly prototype and successfully iterate on game designs
6) Reflect upon and explain their design decisions and goals

Fagligt indhold:In this project cluster we explore board game and card game design, with a particular emphasis on how these games systems structure and affect player-player interactions. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of old and new analog games that have inspired contemporary digital games. Through readings, discussions, and their own design work, students will examine the differences and similarities between analog and digital games, with an eye towards what the two forms can learn from one another. Students will also explore hybrid forms that combine the two traditions.

Each seminar meeting will focus on a specific game. During these seminars, students will try the week’s game, followed by a group discussion and analysis. Discussion topics will include behavioral observations, system balance, the relationship between theme and mechanics, and possible applicability (or inapplicability) to digital game design.

Students will propose a team-based game design project during Week 5 of the project cluster and will submit a playable iteration of this project as a final submission. Throughout the semester, students will rapidly prototype and iteratively refine their designs. To facilitate this process, class time will be set aside for playtests and interactive project critiques.

The final submission should include the game itself, the design document, and a written reflection on the game, the specific design goals and inspirations, and the design process.

Læringsaktiviteter:

14 weeks of teaching consisting of exercises, discussion, and project critiques. The project cluster will take the form of seminar meetings.

Students are responsible for attending weekly class meetings, and are also expected to do group work outside of class.
