After the course the student should be able to:

• Identify and critically discuss different metaphors in organization theory, their origin and relevance for IT innovation in contemporary organizations

• Account for and reflect on theories of practice in analyzing action, cognition, cooperation, IT and other technologies

• Apply analytical tools in discussing the use of IT in an organizational setting

• Reflect on various perspectives on IT and innovation in contemporary organizations, and their potential effects on how IT is deployed and put to use

Fagligt indhold: The objective of the course is to introduce the field of organization theory and particularly to practice a theoretical approach to analyzing technology, interaction and innovation in organizations. In the first part of the course we will concentrate on the field of organization theory, based on a metaphorical approach as developed by Gareth Morgan. Additionally, we will focus on recent innovations in organizational design, relating to deployment of IT. The second part introduces to process oriented practice based approaches to information technology as they have developed in fields such as CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) and STS (Science Technology Studies). We will focus on important pragmatic contributions to understanding action/interaction, cooperation, technologies, formalization, classification and standards, among other things, and how those ideas can be put to use in analyzing and designing contemporary organizational settings. The objective of the course is to develop students’ ability to manoeuvre in organizations and take part in IT innovations.
Læringsaktiviteter:

The course will consist of 12 weeks of teaching, made up of lectures, exercises and group activities. In the exercise sessions students may draw on examples and experiences from other courses or for instance your own work experience, just as we will discuss case material that illustrates the effects of various theoretical approaches. Additionally, students will be assigned to write smaller presentations and to give group based feed back on the presentations.
