Formelle forudsætninger:In order to participate at this course you must have completed Database Tuning, or take Database Tuning in parallel, or have achieved equivalent competencies elsewhere.
Information about the course of study: This course is part of a specialization on the Master of Science in IT, study programme Software Development and Technology. 
Læringsmål:After the course the student should be able to:

Analyze the performance impact of design choices within a database system (indexing, query optimization, concurrency control and recovery)

Analyze and Compare the characteristics of different data models (relational, sequence, array)

Analyze and Compare the characteristics of storage architectures (e.g., RAID, SSDs)

Design and execute experiments to evaluate a data management system performance 
Fagligt indhold:This class will give students a unique opportunity to get a hands-on experience tuning a database system for a given application.

Successful candidates will acquire a thorough understanding of the internals of data management systems; they will be able to choose a data management system that matches given needs and they will be able to tune a data management system for performance.

Reasoning about the performance of a database system requires (a) understanding the internal workings of the database system, and (b) the ability to experiment to either troubleshoot a performance problem or expose the performance characteristics of a given system.

This class is built around a project. This is not a class with lectures and exercises, but a project where students get an opportunity to use the concepts and techniques learnt in the Database Tuning course (SDT1).

This class is part of the Database specialisation. The project is designed to be taken at the same time as SDT1, but it can also be taken after SDT1. 

The course is transformed to a PC 2.0 course and learning activities stated below do not apply any longer. Please consult learnIT for a current description.

Teaching consists of project supervision.
NB!! Course restriction!!
Please note that there is a course restriction between this course and the SDT courses Database Tuning, Scientific Data Management and Advanced Data Management.
That means that you cannot take this course, if you have already taken Database Tuning, Advanced Data Management and Scientific Data Management, and that you cannot take Scientific Data Management if you take this course.

Database Tuning Project is the last part of the second part of the Database specialization on SDT. You need to take the course Database Tuning before taking the course.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:C: Skriftlige arbejder uden mundtlig eksamen., (7-scale, external exam)

Submission of individual projects, negociated between student and teacher.
The conditions for the project will be introduced on LearnIT and during lectures.
The report size man follow ITU´s guidelines for independant studies.
