Formelle forudsætninger:Programming is required (i.e. at minimum an Introduction to Programming course). Some background in artificial intelligence is useful. Please contact the instructor if you are unsure of your qualifications to take this course.
Læringsmål:The purpose of this course is to give computer science and technical students a strong interdisciplinary introduction to the area of interactive narrative. Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Critically analyze and evaluate existing interactive storytelling systems from an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • Technically evaluate algorithms and tools for existing interactive storytelling systems.
  • Develop medium-scale interactive narrative systems in a team environment.
  • Apply theoretical models of narrative to develop interactive narrative systems.
  • Provide rigorous evaluation of the systems they develop.

Fagligt indhold: In this course we review narrative based virtual environments with a particular focus on computational models of narrative and the techniques underlying such systems. There will be some initial framing of the subject matter via theoretical models from narrative and film theory, and then attention will turn toward a comparative study of various approaches to computationally model and manage interaction within narrative based environments (story generation, drama management, discourse generation, interaction).
Students will propose and develop computational algorithms for an interactive narrative system.

Topics will include:

  • Narrative and film theory (Theoretical models of narrative).
  • Computational models of story generation (Study of existing automatic story generation and interactive drama systems).
  • Planning and story generation (Introduction to planning algorithms and representation of stories in a planning formalism).
  • Computational story generation systems (Study of existing automatic storytelling systems).
  • Discourse (Procedural techniques used in generation of natural language, visuals, music, and lighting in interactive environments).
  • Interactivity (theoretical and computational models of interaction).

The class will consist of in-class seminars.
Readings from different areas (narratology, film theory, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, game studies, etc) will be used and students will be assigned varying roles throughout the course (proponent and opponent) for these papers. The proponent will present the paper in class; the opponent will ask critical questions and lead the discussion against the proponent.

Students will propose a team project on interactive narrative from topics covered in class during Week 5 of classes and will submit a working demo of this project as a final submission.

Læringsaktiviteter:

This description may be changed until the start of the term.

Students will be required to present on readings and there will be mini-quizzes on those readings throughout the course.
In addition, final hand-in will consist of a 10 page group project report and demo on a medium sized interactive narrative project based on techniques learned in class.

Please notice! You sign up for this project cluster as if it was a normal course. But please note:

  • Enrolment in a project cluster is not considered a binding course registration (only relevant to MSc students).
  • The project cluster will not appear on your diploma. But the project that you register in the Project Base will of course appear when you have passed the exam.
  • Single-subject students at Open University and guest students from other universities interested in the project cluster, please contact the Student Administration Office, phone +45 72 18 52 05.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

Oral exam based on the hand-in, demo, and additional questions about the course material.

Litteratur udover forskningsartikler: A compendium will be available from the bookstore.
