Formelle forudsætninger:Students should have taken an introductory database course either at the bachelor level, or at the MSc level.
Læringsmål:After the course, students should be able to:

(a) Analyze the performance impact of design choices within a database system (indexing, query optimization, concurrency control and recovery)
(b) Compare the characteristics of different data models (relational, sequence, array)
(c) Compare the characteristics of distributed and parallel data management architectures (e.g., database management system, column store, cluster/grid data processing)
(d) Design and execute experiments to evaluate a data management system performance.

Fagligt indhold:The overall purpose of this course is to enable students to understand and improve the performance of data management systems.

Successful candidates will acquire a thorough understanding of the internals of data management systems; they will be able to choose a data management system that matches given needs and they will be able to program a data management system for performance.

The course will cover the following topics:

(1) Architectures: GAMMA, c-store, bigtable/h-base
(2) Data models: relational, array-based, sequence
(3) Query optimization and execution
(4) Indexing
(5) Transaction management: Concurrency Control and recovery
(6) Database tuning.

Throughout the class, we will cover examples from advanced applications (including science, and analytics).

Læringsaktiviteter:

The course will be based on lectures and exercises. The exercises will have the form of three database tuning assignments, on which the grade will be based.

NB!! Course restriction!!
Please note that there is a course restriction between this course and the SDT course Database Tuning.
That means that you cannot take this course, if you have already taken Database Tuning, and that you cannot take Database Tuning if you take this course.

This also means that there is a conflict with the Database specialization on SDT.This course is not a part of the specialization. If you want to take this specialization you should register for the course Database Tuning.
