Formelle forudsætninger:This course is the second part of the specialization i Mobile Communication.

In order to participate in this course you must have attended the first part of the specialization in Mobile Communication: the course 'Technical Issues and Methods for Study'.

 
Læringsmål:After the course students should be able to describe, analyze, explain and critically reflect on the following issues:

  • The regulatory issues of mobile communication
  • The functioning of the commercial dimensions of mobile communication and mobile media.
  • The relationship between mobile communication and mobile media in the production of news.
  • Elements of mobile design
  • Insight into the social consequences of mobile communication.
 
Fagligt indhold:The mobile communication specialization is designed to give students insight into the regulatory, business and design dimensions of mobile communication and mobile media. As is obvious, there are many different areas of mobile media and communication, involving many actors and an increasing uptake by users. The course introduces mobile media and communication from a global perspective. Students become familiar with how the mobile has become deeply embedded into the textures of everyday life, both on the go and at home, and both for mobile communication and for mobile media. 
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

The class will extend for 14 weeks including 12 lectures, 11 exercise sections and 2 weeks of supervision. 

Obligatoriske aktivititer:The course will have the following mandatory assignments that the student will have to fulfill in order to be qualified to take the final exam. These are:

  1. Write at least eight blog posts on class readings. The blog posts will give an overview of all the articles assigned for a particular week, the synthesis of these and the student’s critical reflections with regards the material in the articles.
  2. A student presentation/discussion where the student presents the readings from the week and leads a class discussion Each student will have to lead at least one such session
  3. Students must write a short paper 5 – 7 page by completing a series three individual assignments:

    • A one paragraph statement of your proposed topic. For help with writing your paper proposal look at the Online Writing Lab at Purdue's University: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/ (Due in week 4 of the class).
    • An annotated initial list of 5 sources relevant to your topic and an outline of the paper; at least 3 of the references must be scholarly journals or books. Information on what a scholarly source is can be found at http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill28.htm. A good example on how to write a paper outline can be found at the Online Writing Lab at Purdue's University: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/general/gl_outlinS.html (Due in week 6)
    • The final paper is due in week 11 of the class.

Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

The final exam for this class will be a written, short answer exam. The students will have a list of approximately 30 study questions from the lecture and 30 study questions from the readings. The study questions will refer directly to elements in the readings and in the lecture material. In the examination the student will be asked to:


  1. Answer 5 of 7 questions (that are drawn from the study questions) based on material from the lecture and
  2. Answer 5 of 7 questions (that are drawn from the study questions) based on the readings.

In the answers the student should make sure to directly answer the issue poised in the question. This will show their ability to describe the material as noted in the intended learning outcome above. In addition they should work to analyze, explain and critically reflect on the particular issue. The ability to touch on these different dimensions of the intended learning outcome will distinguish the quality of the answer.

Length of exam: 4 hours.
