Formelle forudsætninger:The course is at the SDT program and also the first part of the DDK
specialization in "Global IT and Organizations". The course is designed to
accomodate both SDT and DDK students 
Læringsmål:The two main objectives of the course is

1.to qualify the students to participate in close collaborative activities between geographically distributed members at a practical level applying theoretical perspectives from CSCW research to practical considerations
2.to qualify the students to apply CSCW concepts to argue or explain particular proposed designs of collaborative technologies

After the course the students will be able to:

•participate in geographically distributed collaborative activities in a qualified manner by taking a proactive role when planning, conducting, and re-aligning geographically distributed project work
•apply CSCW concepts on design of collaborative technologies

The intended learning outcomes are that the student can:

•Identify and analyze collaborative challenges experienced in geographical distributed collaboration applying theoretical concepts from CSCW and virtual team research
•Describe, explain, and argue essential challenges and theoretical concepts when designing collaborative technologies to various settings (e.g. games, healthcare, or organizations)

CSCW=Computer Supported Cooperative Work 
Fagligt indhold:The course will begin by introducing the overall framework for the course which comprises four themes and their attributed concepts. There are four main themes in the course (social context; collaboration; groupware technology; virtual project management). Throughout the course the students will be reading, reflecting, and discussing each of these themes both in class and during their exercises by relating the theoretical concepts to a case of global software development of their own choosing. The exercises will be in groups with supervision on the students’ projects.

The themes of the course are:

Social Context: Issues related to establishing and maintaining a social context in dispersed collaboration, includes trust, common ground, culture, language

Collaboration: Issues related to collaborative activities in dispersed settings, includes task-dependencies; coordination, commitment, negotiations, awareness, translucence, articulation work, time, plans, and situated actions

Groupware Technologies: Issues related to choosing, adapting, and re-configuring groupware technologies to support geographically distributed collaboration

Virtual project management: Issues related to managing the social context, the collaborative engagement, and technology use in geographically distributed project work.

 
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

The course will be a mixture of lectures, assignments, practices with technology mediation, discussions, student presentations, and groupwork with supervision.

There will be readings for each lecture - typically 1-2 research papers.

The students will be assigned to groups (3-4 in each), where they choose a case of global software development designing collaborative technologies for a particular domain. The objective of the case is that the students through the semester make a plan for how to execute and handle this case of global software development as well as be able to argue why this would be an appropriate approach using the theoretical concepts of the course. This case entails that the students in groups consider collaborative activities for designing collaborative technologies for particular domains applying theoretical CSCW concepts to explain and argue for the designs.

Planned guest lecture on virtual project management:
External lecture on project management in global virtual team, Erik Korsvik Østergaard, NNIT, focusing collaboration in virtual teams and actual implementations I Danish organizations. He has 8-10 years experiences and an EBA in cross-cultural project work.

Exam: The exam is 20 min individual oral exam. Each student will by the end of the course turn in a 5 page project report in groups. This report presents the case of global interaction they have been working on during the course. This includes how they would plan and conduct the proposed project of global interaction in the future including establishing a social context, identify and solve the collaborative task, choose and align groupware technology. Also the students will be asked to explain and argue the design of the collaborative technology of their case. At the exam the student is asked to reflect upon their case including the collaborative technology in focus and argue the choice of managing the case as well as for the proposed design applying the theoretical CSCW concepts discussed during the course.
