Formelle forudsætninger:This course is the final one in the DDK specialization "Social and Cultural IT", it is therefore expected that the students can use the methods learned in the first course of the specialization about Situational Methods. If you are joining the course as a guest or taking it as an elective, you will need similar skills in qualitative methodology use.  
Læringsmål: After the course the student should be be able to:

1. Discuss the notion of culture as it is applied to respectively ethnography, cultural studies and science and technology studies (STS) as well as the implications of different approaches to culture when studying digital communication.

2. Relate new media culture & technology to a broader historical context.

3. Discuss different methodological perspectives in the study of digital culture and society and apply them in practice.

4. Apply the key concepts taken from sociology and other cultural theory in relation to different empirical issues and cases.

5. Individually identify a current and original area of research related to the course’s theme and carry out a case based study with the theories and methods presented in the course as a point of departure.
 
Fagligt indhold:The student should have an interest in:

- Developing and understanding the social and cultural implications of IT and

- Developing analytical and methodological skills in relation to the study of different cases in the area of digital culture.

Relevant themes for the cultural and sociological aspects of digital media include, for example:

Definition of digital culture
Cyber culture: myths and dreams
Mobile society & net society
The digital everyday life
Co-creative nature of network culture
Identity and embodiment in network life
Online communities, social cohesion, and social life
Virtual worlds and games
Information & news
Political engagement and protest
Online youth culture
New forms of public life – citizenship and negotiation
Remix culture
Intellectual property and ownership in digital culture
Traditional demographic factors (gender, race, class, sexuality) and network culture
Technology and knowledge 
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger og øvelser

The course will be taught as a mixed lecture/seminar where the teacher will steer the discussion, but the students are expected to contribute actively by presenting themes and participate in the debate each week. It is expected that students participate in the different elements of the seminar (preparation, discussion and exercises). Students will also be responsible for contributing to a collective course space (blog, wiki, etc.).

The course will have a significant focus on the student developing their own independent research project which will be presented in their final paper for the class.

The class takes up 15 ECTS and thus covers half of the time for a full time student. Consequently you can expect to use approximately 18 hours a week on the class (four hours in the actual seminar and the rest in preparation, reading and in project work).
