Formelle forudsætninger:This course builds directly on Computer Game Theory (MCST) / Game Theory
(MGT), which must be completed as a requirement for enrollment. The student
shopuld already have a basic understanding of the theoretical aspects of
games and gaming.

A keen interest in theoretical issues and concepts is a must; if you'd
rather practice game design, this course is not for you.

You are expected to take active part in the course, which will be run as a
seminar with obligatory student presentations. 
Læringsmål:This theory course seeks to promote methodological thinking among game
research students. Through careful examinations of crucial game concepts and
close analyses of one or more games, participants will learn to understand
game elements and their function. Game analysis can mean many things, and
the participants will chose their own tools from among many possible ones,
depending on the purpose of the analysis. The course aims to let the
students develop a critical vocabulary and a set of tools that support their
critical examination of the games or game elements.

This should be useful to game designers, game critics, and anyone who want
to develop a finer sense of how games achieve their goals.

The course will make the participants familiar with some of the cutting edge
issues in current computer game theory:


* the relationship between theory and practice; can theory influence
game design?
* Understanding games a whole, comprised of part technology, part
artwork, and part social convention and interaction.
* What does it mean to analyse games?
* How are emotions used in games?
* Is emergence a key concept, or a misnomer for several unrelated
structures?
* What is the relation between game structure and game content?

Practical goals of the course are:

The student will have aquired a sense of the most important discussions and
issues in the field of critical game theory.
The student will be able to participate in a theoretical debate in the
field.
The student will be able to write a research-quality paper on a theoretical
issue, critically applying game theories and concepts to solve a
self-formulated research question.
The student will be prepared to write a master's thesis in game theory and
analysis. 
Fagligt indhold:The course will focus on several indepth investigations of particularly crucial topics and concepts:

  • Game Analysis
  • Gameplay
  • Ontologies and taxonomies (eg. game design patterns, MDA etc)
  • Emotions in Games
  • Emergence
  • Fun and Experience
  • Values, Norms, Ideologies

Relevant games to analyse as part of the course is Oblivion, HalfLife2, Age of Empires III, Sims2, and others to be chosen by the class.

I introugen (uge 35) er øvelsestimerne aflyst for dette kursus. Dvs. at der kun er undervisning fra 10-12.

During the intro week (week 35) this class will be held on its regular days but from 10.00-12.00 (and exercises are cancelled).

For at blive cand.it. i MTG skal du bestå MTG¿s backbonekurser, og desuden gennemføre en 22,5 ECTS specialisering samt to 7,5 ECTS valgfag.

In order to graduate as a MSc in MTG, you need to pass the MTG backbone courses, and also take a 22,5 ECTS specialization and two 7,5 ECTS electives.
