Kursusnavn (engelsk):Context-based App-design
Semester:Forår 2015
Udbydes under:Bachelor i digitale medier og design (bdmd)
Omfang i ECTS:7,50
Kursussprog:Engelsk
Kursushjemmeside:https://learnit.itu.dk
Min. antal deltagere:12
Forventet antal deltagere:30
Maks. antal deltagere:40
Formelle forudsætninger:This course is part of the fourth semester of the bachelor's degree in digital media and design.
Læringsmål:After this course the students should be able to:
- define context for design of mobile applications, covering social, cultural and material aspects of context and their relation to design
- plan and conduct a design project for a mobile application, with a particular focus on how social, cultural and material contextual information is obtained, and used in core functionalities of the application
- select, motivate, combine and apply relevant theories and methods for studying, understanding and utilizing social, cultural and material context information in application design
- reflect on practical and theoretical aspects of social, cultural and material context, based on experience from designing a context-based mobile application
Fagligt indhold:The students will be introduced to how context in interaction design can be understood from different perspectives. These perspectives include early perspectives on context, e.g. situated interaction, embodied interaction, context-aware computing and location-based services. In addition, the perspectives introduced include a broader understanding of context in terms of the concept of place, as understood in e.g. cultural geography, and its relations to information and communication technology. The focus is on how a deep understanding of social, cultural and materials aspects of context can be developed for a specific mobile application, and integrated into the design of such an application.
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

During the course the students will develop one or more applications on one or more of the development platforms introduced in the course. The course will start with a 3 week period with introductory lectures and exercises on context from different perspectives. In parallel, the students are introduced to the different platforms offered. The is followed by a 9 week application development project where the students work in groups with developing a mobile application, with a particular focus on the role of context, and how contextual information can be applied in design and use. Contextual information can include material context, like position information or various sensors, but it can also cover social and cultural aspects of context. The 9 week development project includes two intermediary project presentations, and concludes with a final presentation, where a mobile application should be demonstrated.

Obligatoriske aktivititer:Content

Workload

Activities
Attendance to the two intermediary project presentations, and the final project presentation, are mandatory.

Feedback

What if the student fails to pass a mandatory activity:

Be aware: The student will receive the grade NA (not approved) at the ordinary exam, if the mandatory activities are not approved and the student will use an exam attempt.
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam)

External evaluation, 7-point grading scale, D2G: Hand-in for groups with following oral exam supplemented by the hand-in. The group has a shared responsibility for the content of the report.

Group report (15 – 20 pages) documenting the application design project. Harvard system is used for referencing.

Group presentation of the application design project, including demonstration of the application.

During the group examination: individual presentations reflecting on the theoretical and practical aspects of applied theories and methods in the project. Group discussions of relevant issues.

The duration of the oral exam is 20 minutes pr. student including evaluation and feedback.
