Læringsmål:This course offers in depth understanding of how classic tools of economics can be used in the Internet environment. It combines the basic results of the traditional economic theories with applications of information technology and explores how these theories can be used for better understanding the new economic phenomena emerging in the Information Society.

The course will provide students with a solid theoretical foundation to differentiate the hype from the current state of the art in Information Society. But more importantly, the objective is to endow students with a portfolio of conceptual tools to embrace future trends and be able to understand the current market trends in the ICT sector.
Fagligt indhold:It has been claimed that the current information revolution has been fundamentally transforming the business landscape. As a consequence, many of the concepts and theories developed for traditional production economies have been confronted - and perhaps undermined - by the rapid development in information technology and telecommunications. This is a significant challenge to our current thinking and inspires us to investigate how changes in technological frontier affect the economic environment, influence market structures and generate profits.

The course will essentially be a mixture of economic theory that will be accompanied by examination of actual business cases. This course draws upon the most recent experience in the impact of information technology on diverse industries. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation to differentiate the hype from the current state of the art in Information Society. But more importantly, the objective is to endow students with a portfolio of conceptual tools to embrace future trends and be able to understand issues such as:

- How has Microsoft become a dominant market player?
- Why is it so difficult to use Linux instead of Mircosoft¿s products?
- What went wrong in the merger of AOL with Time Warner?
- Why is eBay considered a successful business model?
- How can mobile operators generate profits from 3G¿ investments?
- How does DoCoMo make profits and increase its market shares?
