Læringsmål:By the end of this course, the students should be able to:
- discuss how we have to rethink democracy and citizenship in digital society,
- apply their analytical thinking to dissect the claims of media-makers and journalists concerning digital democratic citizenship,
- critique how others discuss the ways in which media technologies will change citizenship and democracy,
- and apply their analytical thinking to their own interview data with citizens in Denmark.
Fagligt indhold:Digital media technologies have been accompanied by a vast array of new media forms, such as social networking sites, blogs, micro-blogs, smartphone apps, image sharing services, and micro-movies. Ordinary citizens can make their voices heard and tell their own stories for mass distribution. They can join politicians, activists, advocacy groups, and media professionals in performing digital democratic citizenship. Many would argue that new media technologies reshape how we vote, protest, resist, deliberate, participate, and manage our everyday lives as citizens in a democratic society.

In this course, we will explore these claims as we survey contemporary theories and statements about the impact of digital media on citizenship and democracy. Do digital media fundamentally alter the nature of democracy? How should we redefine democratic citizenship in a digital society? How can advocacy groups convey a message in novel ways? How do we make our voices heard in today’s over-mediated society? And what happens in a democracy when ordinary citizens become producers and mass distributers of content?

In order to answer these questions, we will explore the dynamics of digital media, democracy, and citizenship as well as how they have continually shaped and been shaped by one another. You will respond to claims by journalists and media-makers about digital democratic citizenship, sharpen your analytical skills using theories of digital democratic citizenship, and interview citizens and discuss the results in class and in writing. We will invite researchers of the Democracy and Citizenship in Digital Society (DECIDIS) initiative at the IT University of Copenhagen to present and discuss their research projects in the light of the issues discussed in class.

The students will submit three written assignments throughout the course, comprising the exam: a) A written critical response to a politician’s or journalist’s statement or news item regarding digital democratic citizenship, b) A written analysis of three qualitative interviews carried out with residents of Denmark, and c) An analytical discussion of assignments a) and b) through the theories introduced in class. The students will receive feedback after each exam.
