Læringsmål:After successful completion of the course the student is expected to:

- Be able to analyze digital games in a thorough and coherent manner, utilizing theories and methods engaged with in the course as a suite of analytical tools.
- Engage critically with the academic literature in the field of Game Studies.
- Refine and develop existing theories to better suit specific applied analysis.
- Research a given topic independently in order to produce a paper that is good enough for submission to an international journal or conference.
Fagligt indhold:Digital games are an increasingly popular genre of entertainment, marketing, expression and art. The course follows two interwoven threads: game analysis and theoretical topics in game research.

The analysis of non-interactive texts such as film and literature has the advantage of presenting a static text that can be dissected without reference to the reader/viewer. With games this is complicated by the feedback loop of player, game-text and machine. The experience of playing cannot be divorced from the game itself, which creates serious challenges to game analysis. In this course we will explore methods of attaining critical distance from the game-playing experience in order to develop a coherent analysis.

This analysis greatly profits from a knowledge of theoretical topics in game research, which, as literary and film theory provide for their respective media, gives an insight into both the structural elements of the game as a media object and the intervening player’s psychology.

The course covers central topics that addresses these issues including:

Digital games, mediation and textuality
Player Involvement
Immersion
Narrative
Emergence
Ethics
Persuasive Games

The course includes both a theoretical and a practical approach including hands-on gaming sessions which take the theory and apply it to specific games through exercises that have been developed specifically for this end.
Læringsaktiviteter:

14 weeks of teaching consisting of lectures, hands-on analysis exercises, presentations, game-blogging, reading groups and a final writing project.
