Fagligt indhold:Over the last decades globalization has become more and more central to organizational analysis as well to organizational practice. The ubiquitous use of information technologies has been central in efforts to render business practices global, as IT is increasingly used to facilitate global work practices. Tendencies such as outsourcing, distributed collaboration and communication, and global innovation teams exemplify the ways in which IT-supported work have global implications. The ability to conceptually understand and empirically analyze the challenges and possibilities of globalization is central for being able to work creatively and imaginatively with IT practices in organizations.

Complementing the course Distributed Collaboration and Development, this course draws on the disciplines of science and technology studies and organizational studies. It offers analytical and practical tools that enable students to analyze the challenges and possibilities organizations face as operating in a global world.

The two main objectives of the course are:

1. To enable students to analyze and discuss sociotechnical organizational issues that arise in a global environment.

2. To enable students to conduct empirical studies of globalized organizational practices and to identify and analyze challenges and possibilities facing specific organizations working in technologically mediated work practices.

The course introduces organizational approaches to understand global change processes in organizations by focusing on five themes:

Introduction to globalization

Actor networks and sociotechnical studies

Technological organizing

Global discourses

Distributed collaboration

In the first half of the course, the focus will be on reading and discussing issues relating to each theme, during lectures as well as exercises

The themes of the course are:

Introduction to globalization: Provides general background and social science analytical tools for understanding globalization.

Actor networks and sociotechnical studies: Presents an analytical framework based on science and technology studies, facilitating understanding how organizational practices are constructed through contextual interactions between people and technologies.

Technological organizing: Explores the role of information technologies in constructing global organizations.

Global discourses: Analyzes discourses on globalization relating to ICT and organizational change.

Distributed Collaboration: Focuses on questions relating to how to organize and communicate knowledge and share work projects in distributed organizational settings.

Each theme will be explored in one or more seminars. They aim to provide inspiration for empirical student projects that we will begin planning and conducting early in the semester.

In the second half of the course, the focus is exclusively on empirical investigation of a self-defined sociotechnical issue relating to globalization.

This project work is conducted individually and involves making a research plan, including an analytically qualified formulation of research questions and methods, making observations and interviews with relevant people, and reading reports and written material and writing a final report.
