Læringsmål:After the course, the students should be able to:

- Characterize the main problems and questions in the philosophy of aesthetics
- Identify the main concepts and theories about aesthetics and articulate their mutual strengths and weaknesses
- Account for the historical development of aesthetic theories, including digital aesthetics
- Define the main properties of digital aesthetics and identify the most relevant digital art genres
- Describe the aesthetic experience, with particular focus on digital works of art and products.
- Analyse digital works of arts as well as other kinds of digital products from an aesthetic perspective
- Evaluate digital creativity
- Interpret new developments in digital culture in the light of aesthetic theory
- Reflect about the wider cultural and social implications of digital art 
Fagligt indhold:This course is an introduction to aesthetics, the philosophy of art, with special focus on digital media and art. Aesthetics aims at explaining the essence of art, its nature, its function and the grounds for its recognition and appreciation.

Some basic questions are: what is (digital) art? How can we distinguish it from non-art? What is artistic value? What is beauty? What is creativity? What is the nature of the (digital) aesthetic experience? Are aesthetic judgements subjective or intellectual? What are the formal properties of digital media suceptible to aesthetic analysis?

We will together describe the field of digital art, look at the main genres and the new developments and uncover its historical dimension. We will define and re-define the essential properties of the medium (interactivity, virtuality, multimediality, simulation, etc.). We will analyze many digital art works and learn to identify the aesthetic aspect of digital media forms.

This course is the first one in the specialization "Digital Aesthetics". The aim of this course is to establish a solid theoretical and analytical foundation, as well as give the students a broad knowledge of digital aesthetics genres and strategies. The second course "Creative Digital Practice" is mainly practical, where the students will develop their own digital art/experiences/entertainment projects. 
Læringsaktiviteter:14 ugers undervisning bestående af forelæsninger, øvelser og vejledning

Intensive reading and writing (of several kinds and genres) will be required of the participant students each week. The sessions will be organized around a lecture, discussions of the texts written by the students, collective analysis of digital artworks and (often) short creative exercises.

Note about the language: a number of the lectures on this course will be in English, and the readings are also mostly in English. However, your written work throughout the course and also your final essay can be in Danish or English.

The final exam will be a 10-12 pages essay dealing with some of the topics relevant to the course. The topic will be decided in collaboration with the teacher, and developed in supervision sessions. The essay will typically be an analysis of one or several works of art (or aesthetic strategies in digital media products), although a more philosophical discussion is also possible.

If essays are written in collaboration, the page number will be adjusted accordingly (+5 per extra student)

There is no oral exam.

• Grahan, Gordon. 2005. Philosophy of the Arts. An Introduction to Aesthetics. New York: Routledge (make sure you get this edition as it is the third)
• Kirkpatrick, Graeme. 2011. Aesthetic Theory and the Video Game. Manchester: Manchester University Press
A kompendium made of articles and chapters from other books will complete the readings for this course.
