It is assumed that students have prerequisites corresponding to the course B1 Strategic and tactical tools for e-business or equivalent.
It is also assumed that the students have a basic understanding of IT.

Læringsmål:
The course provides a strategic perspective on the development, use and management of IT. After completion of the course, students should be able to:
- take part in strategic planning using IT in different business contexts
- take a proactive role in proposing relevant tools and techniques for using IT on a strategic level
- formulate strategies where IT plays an important role
- argue the case of the relevance of IT for business leaders
Fagligt indhold:
We shall start by having a quick re-cap of the concept of business model, and the two schools of strategy.
A number of models for looking at the alignment between the IT and business strategy will be discussed.
Furthermore, IT leadership will be discussed in connection with managing and leading the IT function in existing and future businesses. Part of this challenge will be to decide on the strategy for IT-outsourcing/off-shoring
Finally, the course will deal with the concept of IT-governance, from purpose to implementation.
In the course we shall use a standard text-book on 'Corporate Information strategy and Management", but we shall augment this with a number of tools and techniques for strategic management, partly from a textbook in Strategy, partly from a list of articles. Furthermore, in almost every 3 hour session, we shall have either a case or guest lectures room industry, presenting strategic issues where IT plays an important role.
Students should only sign up for this course if they are prepared to study prior to coming to class, since case-teaching is used for a significant part of the lectures.
Course objectives:
After the course students should be able to
¿ Identify how IT can be used for supporting business strategy
¿ Develop an e-business strategy for a company
¿ Identify the most important issues in leadership of IT functions
¿ Specify to main elements in IT governance and argue for an IT governance strategy for an organization
As part of the course, students will have to either develop an IT strategy for an organization or develop a case that might be used for teaching. This is done in groups. The exam is based on this written material.
