Formelle forudsætninger:The prerequisite for the course is an elementary database course at a level corresponding to the course in Databases.

Fagligt indhold:- Information Indexing and Search.
The main focus in this course will be on mining, extraction, indexing and retrieval of information mainly from textual data such as business databases, document collections, electronic archives and the world wide web.
We will touch on basic theory as well as recent advances in information retrieval, data and text mining, information extraction, knowledge representation, and ontologies, and relate this to indexing, processing, and querying of textual data.
The course will combine lectures and seminars given by students. The specific contents of the course and the order in which things appear will be adjusted based on students interest and needs.
The emphasis will be on newer techniques that try to move beyond keyword search and bring semantics into the task of processing and retrieving textual information. In particular intelligent and knowledge based approaches will be covered. We will study approaches the attempt to exploit domain knowledge in retrieval, touch upon the vision of the Semantic Web, analyze how statistical approaches, natural language processing techniques as well as text mining and learning techniques can improve the descriptions resulting from indexing, and we will study to what extent it is realistic to combine semantics and efficient indexing and retrieval evaluation techniques.
