This course is a bachelor elective on the bachelor in Digital Media and Design.
Læringsmål:After the course, the student should be able to:
  • Discuss the concept of play from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on its social and cultural importance
  • Articulate the difference between play and games
  • Analyze interactive digital experiences in terms of different play types
  • Apply the concept of play as a design principle
  • Design, and implement or video-prototype a digital play experience
  • Fagligt indhold:We will explore play in an interdisciplinary manner, and stake out its cultural, anthropological, sociological and psychological meaning. Particular emphasis will be placed on the difference between play and games, the social importance of play, and its relationship to creativity. We will contextualize play within 20th and 21st century art and media practice, investigate the relationship between play and interaction design, and explore (in both theory and practice) how play provides powerful emotional, social and cognitive experiences that can be used in the creation of digital experiences or products.

Please take note that this is neither a game theory nor game design class.

There are no mandatory activities. Please, change this text ONLY when there are mandatory activities.
Eksamensform og -beskrivelse:X. experimental examination form (7-scale; external exam), 7-trins-skala, Ekstern censur

    Final hand-in consists of:

    - A working prototype or video prototype of a digital interactive experience that uses play as the central interaction and conceptual model. Prototypes are done in groups.

The design project does not have to be a working prototype. A video prototype is sufficient. Those with computing experience are, however, free to use whatever technology they are comfortable with, from Arduino to HTML.

    - A 2500 words individual reflection that uses the course literature to analyze the prototype as a case study

Litteratur udover forskningsartikler:The students will be asked to buy a compendium with the relevant literature for each lecture.
